Jessica Lange’s mission is to immerse audiences in the beauty of music and movement. Her dance aesthetic is very clear and full of volume and fluidity. Her uses of unforeseen props, lighting, music quality and the emotion of her dancers set her apart from many today’s choreographers. To do my research I decided to focus on six of Jessica’s pieces. The pieces I chose were Thousand Yard Stare (2016), Tesseracts of Time (2015), The Wanderer (2014), Lines Cubed (2012), Her Road (2017), and i.n.k. (2011). What makes Jessica’s work unique is her use of not only physicality but also emotionality. When she creates a work it is not just the moves or the steps, it is every element. Whether it is the props or lighting, she puts all of that into her work to create an incredible vision. What is signature about Jessica is that she wants to make her work accessible to all people. She believes that dance can sometime remove people because they are afraid of what they may not know. What I learned in the compare section is that Jessica likes to use flowy movements. She definitely notes musicality as well. When the music is louder and has more hard beats, the music matches and vice versa. She also uses props in the majority of her pieces. Artwork, poetry, props, etc. Tess Alfano from Broadwayworld.com says Jessica’s piece Lines Cubed “had an artistic texture that made the audience feel as if they were watching a moving painting.” Jessica also states that she tries to connect with all types of people whether they are familiar with the art of dance or not, which can be a huge challenge in itself. Another way she challenges not only herself but her dancers as well is by getting her dancers to do improvisation based on a word or a phrase given by Jessica.
