“If there's just one kind of folks, why can't they get along with each other? If they're all alike, why do they go out of their way to despise each other? Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time. It's because he wants to stay inside.” In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there is a character named Jeremy “Jem” Finch, he is one of the lead protagonist that learns various things throughout the novel. As Jem ages throughout the novel, his characteristics also develop. In this story, Jem possess the characteristics of being meticulous, independent, and caring. For the duration of the novel, Jem proves himself to be a meticulous character, despite rushing into things. Jem tends to analyze each situation that he’s in. Jem proves this when he stated, “‘... I-it’s like this, Scout,’ he muttered. ‘Atticus ain’t ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way’” (75). The situation caused Jem to think about the way it will affect Atticus’ trust for him, if he finds out that Jem has lied to him. Jem, in the story,has indirectly shown that he cares for his little sister. “‘ So you brought that dirty little sister of yours, did you?’” was her greeting. Jem said quietly, ‘My sister ain’t dirty and I ain’t scared of you,’ although I noticed his knees shaking” (141). Although it showed that Jem was afraid of Mrs. Dubose, he kept a brave face for his sister and made sure to tell her not to insult his sister. Jem has shown that he cares with his actions. “‘ Here Scout, let me hold onto your - hock. You might lose your balance’” (348).
