People have free will [BS]. Men have no true meaning, true purpose, or true significance [Parallel]. Men will forever remain in their own hell knowing that they exist in a meaningless universe. To survive, men contain a single gift: their free will. Free will, however, creates evil, crime, and violence. With complete free will men welcome the opportunities to succeed, but these decisions often lead to the destruction of many [BCS]. Jean-Paul Sartre uses his existentialist piece “No Exit” to express that the universe will force men to accept the consequences of their actions, no matter how horrible it may be. Existentialists realize the inevitability of harm coming from free will. Although men have constant opportunities to excel in life, they continue to bring others down in order to come out on top. “Existentialism is a complex philosophy emphasizing the absurdity of reality and the human responsibility to make choices and accept consequences,” (GILLIS). Sartre’s characters in “No Exit” murdered, cheated, and lied. Their actions resulted in admittance into hell. Refusal to accept the consequences of their actions caused their eternal torture by the hands of one another. Estelle perfectly exemplifies their absurdity when she says,

While each human exists in a meaningless universe, they transform their nature through their decisions. They each decided to live horribly as murderers and cheaters, but they never had to face the consequences until after death. They will live eternally seeking comfort from their torturers because of their terrible nature. The hellish trio must now eternally face the consequences of their behavior because they knew it was wrong at the time, but they only ever cared for themselves.
