Recommended: Character of Jay Gatsby

We all want to get better. We always want our future to be brighter and more hopeful, and we strive for perfection. We dream big and do what we can to accomplish these dreams. Jay Gatsby was no exception. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby, the wonderful man who is admired greatly finds himself optimistic for the future, always yearning for the green light. Throughout the concluding excerpt from Chapter 9 in the novel, Gatsby’s optimism is evident and he is ready took look onto a better tomorrow. Even though it may appear as though Jay Gatsby has everything he can possibly desire, he truly wants one more thing, and is constantly fighting to achieve something that he cannot accomplish.
We must keep standing up when we fall, and keep trying when we fail. With failure, one seeks to overcome shortcomings by seeking a better future. As time progresses, Fitzgerald explores Jay Gatsby’s long desire for Daisy and emphasizes and his optimism for the future. Fitzgerald uses optimistic diction to express Gatsby’s view on the future when he states, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us” (180). Gatsby yearns for a future with Daisy, and truly attempts to look for the “green light” in each situation. The color green represents hope and new beginnings. Fitzgerald utilized the color green to serve as a color of optimism and positivity. Gatsby desires and hopes for a love that he cannot get, and still believes he can find a way to achieve his goals. .We become so lost and caught up in the past that we en up letting it take over ourselves. Gatsby has an obvious desire of Daisy’s love but his dream has him living in the past. Gatsby presumably has everything anyone can ask for. He believes in the green light. He allows the green light to bring him opportunity. He thinks of the glass as half full. Sometimes Gatsby’s optimistic approach can get the best of him. We all face tough moments but we recover from them and try to move on from things from the past. Although Daisy will always have a spot in Jay Gatsby’s heart, not all dreams can be reached. Jay got as close as it gets to gain Daisy and her love, but failed. It may be tough, but unreachable dreams need to be suppressed.
