Sancho is excited to see a Chicana in his store but when he pronounces her name in Spanish she is quick to correct him. Ms. Jiminez she responds in an English accent. This scene has a lot of meaning because we gather that she was assimilated to the Anglo culture. She does not want to associate with her Mexican roots. She insists on being a proper American representative, but she is looking for a Mexican model during her lunch break. She presents Sancho with some stipulations he must be a Mexican she states, "But this one is too dark. I’m looking for a beige one." This is yet another indicator of the detachment Ms. Jimenez has from her culture. I believe she wants a light Mexican so that he can he can be versatile and mix in with the crowds.

...n, Gonzalez states his identity; "I am Aztec Prince and Christian Christ." This combination of culture is the basis of his poem, which can be found at http://www.pbs.org/chicano/joaquin.html, and is representative of the heritage of Mexican Americans. The concept of Aztlan is explained in Chicano!, and the mural ‘Corazon de Aztlan,’ found in Chicano Park (http://chicanopark.org/murals/north/n8.html ), reinforces the importance of this image in the lives of Chicanos. The myth of Aztlan symbolizes centuries of culture and struggles of Mexican Americans who went through incredibly difficult times throughout history, but never lost hope and always stayed strong, determined to one day be treated equally as citizens of the United States of America.

Detective Maya Vasquez is the protagonist of the show. She comes from a lower end of a middle class economic background and is a native of Lake Arthur. Three ways to describe her are: intrepid, a straight-shooter, and persistent. Maya is also Latina which plays an important role in the way she is treated by side characters. She did not attend college, but did attend and complete her training at a police academy. Maya’s character is similar to the theme in Shondaland of having a multi-dimensional career-driven female lead. However, unlike Scandal’s Olivia Pope and How to Get Away With Murder’s Annalise Keating, Maya Vasquez is not world-renowned or even well revered within her own town. Instead she struggles to be taken seriously in her field

Abandoned by his father, at age one, his mother moved their family to Pasadena, California; there she raised Robinson and his four siblings all by herself. Jack became a star athlete in high school excelling in football, basketball, track, and his weakest sport baseball. Jack was not the only athlete in his family. His brother Mack, won a silver medal in the 1936 Berlin Olympics for the 200 meter dash finishing second to Jesse Owens. When his brother returned the only job he could get was sweeping the streets. Robinson grew to hate Pasadena, according to Ray Bartlett, a friend he would later meet at UCLA. (Jerome 71) While Mallie, Jack’s mom, struggled to raise her family alone, she instilled the values in Robinson that made him fight not just for himself, but for others. (Berkow A16)

Logan Gutierrez-Mock’s “F2MESTIZO” takes on the subject matter of intersectionality between race, gender, and class similarly to bell hooks’ theory on drag balls within the film, Paris is Burning. Because the ideas of passing between two races and defining gender identity are interdependent, we see characters enter and exit worlds of powerlessness and privilege, imitate white status to gain privilege, establish a two-fold world of us against them; this reveals much about the internalized racism that arises from the power complexities between races and genders.
