Jane Long is known as the “Mother of Texas.” She earned this title after braving through many mishaps to stay with her husband, who was rebelling against Mexico, which includes scavenging for food, scaring off Native Americans, and even giving birth to her third child with no help. This makes her the first English speaking woman to give birth in Texas. She is a perfect example of Texas bravery. Jane was born in 1798. Her father died only about a year after she was born, so her and her mom moved to the Mississippi territory. After her mom died the next year, Jane went to go live with her sister on a plantation. Jane later met Long and married him in 1815. She had a little girl in 1816, who she named Ann. Later on, her husband went out to fight for Texas independence. She followed him, but was delayed due to illness. She left her younger daughter, who she gave birth to in 1819, when she recovered to follow her husband, running off with both her older daughter and black slave. Her younger daughter died soon after she left. She ended up staying in Nacogdoches. While she was staying there, Spanish troops arrived and forced out the families living there. Jane Long, being the very loyal wife she was, followed Mr. Long and waited for him. She waited a very long time with little food and fuel. She even had to fight off indians. She fought off the indians by shooting cannons, making them believe there were soldiers still defending the area. She fed herself and her daughter by eating clams they found in the river and hunting with very little ammo. Eventually, she had another daughter.
