The Subjective Necessity for Social Settlements, 1892
In the beginning of 1890 the US experimented a time period called the progressive era. During this period of time the American society faced a lot radical changes in industrialization and the development of a rapid urbanization, as well as changes in government policies and institutions. The main characteristics of the progressive regulation was mainly to eliminate corrupt monopolies, and to promote the urban industrial society through the production of manufactures. However, the rapid grow of industrial factories incremented the number of arriving immigrants from eastern and southern Europe who were mostly unskilled and non-English speakers. Although, the US was starting to take power with the development of new corporations, in the contrary the higher rates of poverty and diseases were becoming common in the urban areas because of the dramatic expansion of crowed tenement houses.
In the document of Jane Addams on Settlement Houses describes the motivation and conviction of people to accomplish a solution towards social issues. The illustration of the settlement houses was a subjective effort aiming for a clear solution for social and industrial problems emerged in larger cities. These people called themselves progressives and they would make America the place we know today. They addressed important issues such as women’s rights, working conditions, and temperance. At this time, America was going through a Gilded Age where everything looked good on the outer perspective however on the inside, there were many issues within society. George Mowry, Gabriel Kolko, and Joseph Huthmacher all show brilliant work of three different opinions discussing the topic of who the Progressives were. Mowry shows excellent work explaining how the “solid middle-class” was the most impactful Progressives and how they reformed in attempt to create a classless society. Kolko explains many reasons to why the big businesses were the majority Progressives, but only focused on business-government relations and didn’t look into social-justice. Huthmacher thoroughly explained why the urban lower class was the main Progressives and made good points on the “Bread-and-butter” issues. The most persuasive historian is George Mowry because of the detail by which the culture of America was changed with the middle-classes reforms.

The Progressive Era was a time period between the years 1900-1920 and it marked a time in American history in which society was bursting with enthusiasm to improve life in the industrial age by making political and social changes through government action that ultimately led to a higher quality of life for American citizens. Progressives were known for their beliefs in limiting the power of big business, strengthening the power of the states, and were advocators against corruption and social injustice. A traditional and conservative role of women in the society are to keep her house clean and feed her children properly. During this time periods, many women are living in a tenement district that has been destroyed due to lack of government interest in the public health. They were not able to serve their family with fresh and healthy meats and fruits. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was an important women’s rights activist that helped plan the first organized women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York and wrote the Declaration of Sentiments. Lucretia Mott worked along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton to plan the first women’s rights convention and wrote the, “Discourse on Women”. Lucy Stone formed the American Women’s Suffrage Association (AWSA) and convince individual states to join the effort towards women rights. These women had an influence in the National American Women’s Suffrage Association’s (NAWSA) achievement of the goals in the Women’s Rights Movement. These women had a profound effect on reaching equal rights between men and women.
With an increase in industrialization people migrate to the cities for the jobs available. The bosses of these companies were free to do whatever they desired since the government had a laissez-faire policy. This brought many problems since the bosses were corrupt, greedy and cared very little for the well being of their employees.
