On Monday morning, the very first thing we did was go on a field trip to the Midtown Global Market. This was an incredible experience and I really enjoyed it. We spent the day dancing, learning, cooking, eating, and exploring the place. Although the whole day was great, my favorite part was trying all the different food from all the different stands. I loved seeing the differences in the foods, when we went to different stalls. I really liked learning about the history of the building and how after it became a vacant building, it was saved to reflect ethnic diversity. Another one of my favorite things was Cuban dancing. It was really cool to see that dancing was a big part of Cuban culture, because dancing is a big part of my culture as well. It's amazing how cultures are so different, yet so similar. Since we did a lot of cooking, there was a lot of waiting time too. Although some people lazed around, some of us decided to have some fun and play a couple games. We attempted the Human Knot and played Zip Zap Zop. We also looked through old yearbooks and found some old pictures of our teachers. I got to bond with kids older and younger than me. We were like a family and this made i-Term so much more fun. Whenever I wasn't by my friend group, I had people to talk to. Against all Odds is a very interesting Documentary that follows the early settlement of Jamestown in the 17th century .With endless against the odds situations thrown out in from of the people of Jamestown left and right things seemed bleak. But a lot of perseverance from the early settlers including the Documentaries depiction of the original leader John Smith things seemed to resolve themselves. In Documentary there were several parts where it conceited with what is in chapter three of the Textbook the American Promise. For example, In the Documentary when the subject of the Tobacco business came up it was exampled in the same way as the first page of chapter three. With examples of how the product was grown and distributed out into the world. Making it a very valuable trade to be doing although very labor intensive, which is why it would soon lead into the slave trade. Something that was briefly shown in the documentary mainly to show what lengths the people of Jamestown were willing to go to make things work out in their new home.

One of the first major English settlements in North America was the colony of Jamestown. Jamestown was located in the Chesapeake region of Virginia and was established under the Virginia Company, which was chartered by James I in 1606. Jamestown was the first colony of London and was established in May 1607. They were a settlement of about 100 men and were led by John Smith. Jamestown was a stock colony, meaning they were founded as a business venture by investors, and sought after gold and silver, as well as products like citrus, pitch, tar, and lumber. The English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, was founded on May 14, 1607 by Captain Christopher Newport and his fleet of a hundred or so Englishmen. During the next nine decades, this settlement would begin as "a verie fit place for the erecting of a great cittie(Tyler, 33)", and develop into "nothing but Abundance of Brick Rubbish, and three or four good inhabited houses(Miers, 107)." Two major factors led to the gradual decay and destruction of Jamestown: (1) The profit-before-survival attitude of the English settlers, and (2) the persistence of the Indians of the area to drive the English from their native lands.
There have been numerous opinions on what would be considered a success o Jamestown settlement. As we know Jamestown was one of the “late comers” colonies developed in the New World. As time goes on archeologist and those who specialized in studying the colonial times has continued to express their opinion of a successful colony. Professor Edward S. Morgan historian at Yale University and Professor Karen Kupperman analysis of The Jamestown Project is a perfect example these archeologist. Morgan and Kupperman shared different views and resulted in difference in opinion on the success of Jamestown.
According to Kittler, Sucher, and Nahikian-Nelms, African Americans is one of the largest cultural groups in the U.S, a measure was done in 2013 have shown that 12% of the U.S population was African American. This chapter focuses on the rich culture that was brought to America by numerous ethnic groups in Africa. Getting into the historical aspects of the voyage of Africans to American, Kittler et al. provide a brief description on the first encounter with Dutch Traders in Jamestown. Stating that more than most of the slaves were predominantly from West African and the acculturation process was occurring at the same time. They also talked about the trial and tribulations of the civil war, after the war, many former slaves emigrated to the north
A group of Europeans, headed by Bartholomew Gosnold, began planning a possible business venture that would send a group of colonists to what was already known as Virginia. Gosnold was apparently the driving force behind getting this operation in place. Gosnold was referred to as "the first mover of this plantation" by Captain John Smith."(Ward) Merchants from London, Bristol and Plymouth sponsored the voyage and persuaded King James to grant a charter and letters of patent to create the Virginia Company. A strange twist to the story was that the man who worked so hard to get this Company started, Gosnold, was unable to become a member but he did manage to become appointed to the resident council. Their job was to work with Virginia associates and be involved in local affairs for the new colony.
104 men were sent to form Jamestown in 1607. 4 months after they arrived, 70 had died. Thousands were sent to take their place over the next 3 years, but they also died. Why?
America is a strong nation, however, it had a very rough beginning. It all began with the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent settlement in America. The settlers had a tough time and overcame many of the adversities that they were confronted with such as cold, natives, lack of motive, and many other factors. Though, through their struggles, they shaped America and its literature as it is today. The legacy that Jamestown left is one that would help found the United States of America as we know it today.
The first effort by the English to establish a colony in the New World was when Sir Walter Raleigh issued a charter to establish a colony at Roanoke. It was the responsibility of Raleigh to make the necessary provisions to complete the journeys to the New World and accomplish the goals of the charter. This entailed hiring ship captains and their crews, recruiting possible colonists, purchasing food and other supplies, and finding those who would invest capital in the missions. Raleigh however did not actively participate in the journeys to Roanoke Island; he was just the organizer and major financier.
In 1607 King James ordered the drafting of a new charter for a new colony in the new world,he declared the name of the aforementioned colony Virginia. The founders of the first colony in Virginia named their first settlement Jamestown, after their monarch. The first winters the settlement starved. Fortunately, Cpt. John Smith assisted in helping the colonists. However, his wounds caused his return to England. The colony then suffered a relapse. Several other men tried to help Jamestown but all but the last one failed. The author wrote an informative essay but the thesis had several errors. In 1606, wealthy people in London formed a group called the Virginia Company. They wanted a colony in the Americas for wealth. Although the Jamestown colony was the first permanent English colony in the Americas, it is not the first English colony to be told to be settled in the Americas. The Roanoke colony, also known as the Lost Colony, was to be settled in America before Jamestown, but it disappeared.
In the sixteenth century, England was one of the most powerful countries in the world. England was also in dire need of money at this time. In an effort to alleviate the country’s financial burdens, King Henry VIII decided to seize land owned by the Catholic Church. Henry then sold the already inhabited land to investors, and its residents were forced out. These people and their descendants would eventually become some of the fortune-seeking colonists that would settle America during England’s try at Imperialism.
The English had two main colonies in the new world, Jamestown and Plymouth. The first colony was Jamestown, established in Virginia in 1607. Tobacco was the main export of Jamestown, and became the basis of the Jamestown economy, sending more than 50,000 lbs of the plan back to Europe by 1618 (textbook 46). Jamestown had a very rocky start, many colonists dying in the first few years of the settlement, and the settlers had many problems with natives. Shortly after the arrival of English colonists the Natives attacked them, and were finally forced back by a canon from the English. A very uneasy truce was finally settled between the natives, called the Powhatans, and the English (textbook 44-5). Economic growth and expanding their territories were the main priorities of the English in the Jamestown colonies.
