The shot clock, the amount of players on the court at a time, and 3 point shots all became a part of the game based on changes made in the sport of basketball (Steve Silverman, 1). Basketball has become a more challenging game over the last 126 years. Some ways they have made the game more challenging is by adding the first NBA teams, the first girls team, and changing some of the rules. But now let’s go back to what basketball was like when it was created.
In a quote James Naismith says, “The invention of Basketball was not an accident. It was made to meet a need.” Naismith had a background with physical education, as he was an Y.M.C.A instructor (Eve Marar 1). In 1891 Naismith created the game because he didn’t like to see how bored the kids got in winter when their sports weren’t in session. Since he was working at the Y.M.C.A he was giving a certain amount to create a game and that’s how basketball got started. Originally, there was baskets used as the hoops, so one of the original rules was; the ball has to be thrown or batted into the basket and it has to stay there (Basketball: How it Began-Facts and Information About the Game,1). Another thing is there was no limit to the amount of players on a court at a time. They could have any number of players on a team, some were even as high as 50. After a little bit they realized 50 players was too much and then made 5 players the mandatory team size. Plus, could you imagine playing basketball without a backboard? The basic backboard was created in 1895, they first started out as wire then went to wood (later on changed to the ones we have today). All of these changes made have been made to keep the spectators interested and keep the challenge
