He also uses reductio ad absurdum to show the ridiculousness of the politicians running for office and how they are deceitful about small things while he is willing to tell how he killed his grandfather for snoring. A second and much worse characteristic that Twain hates is peoples general greediness. Mark Twain starts mentioning greediness very early in the book when he talks about Huck’s father, Pap. When Huck found out that Pap was alive, the first thing he went to do was give Judge Thatcher his $6000, because he knew his father would want it all. The greediness of Pap has caused his own son to hide his money from him so he will not take it, showing the lack of respect in their relationship. Even when Pap runs into Huck immediately he asks him is how much money he had on him, and Huck had to hand it over.
In the novel Huck Finn, the author repeatedly uses satire to ridicule the insanity of racial ignorance and inequity of the time period. With his masterful use of role reversal, irony, and the obvious portrayal of double standards, Twain exemplifies the injustices of different races contrasting them with example after example of counter-argument shown through the friendship and adventures of Jim and Huck together.
Overall, this book was silly, humorous, serious, tense, and funny in all the right ways. It accurately depicted American culture of the time, although sometimes it was a little over the top. This book was basically about a young teen named Huck, grown up in a very close-minded society, who learns and matures throughout a journey with a runaway slave with a big heart, and learns as a first hand experience (which is a better type of learning than teachers regurgitating biased information that may be inaccurate) of what he should truly feel and what his actual opinion of many things are. This book really helped me imagine what living in the late 1800s was like and how bad the issue of racism was, with a lot of comic relief and silly portrayal of white Americans at the time.
Twain’s writing style in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer can be best characterized as saturnine humor along with satirical jeers at society. For instance, Twain writes, “There was once a church choir that was not ill-bred, but I have forgotten where it was, now.” (36). In this excerpt, Twain is poking fun at churches in general, as he satirically describes the poor quality of their choirs. Along with this new form of writing, Twain also freely includes unorthodox language, mainly in dialogue. In the world of Tom Sawyer, children respond to their mothers with a “Yes’m”, friends trade “hoopsticks”, and society uses words that would be considered obscene today. Every serious Twain scholar knows of Twain’s reputation as a burlesque humorist/satirist as well as his anti-imperialist and anti-religious tendencies. The scholar must be careful when labeling or categorizing Twain’s work because of his frequent use of sarcasm but Twain definitely liked blacks and abhorred slavery. His treatment of Natives and the Chinese was questionable when looked at apart from his work as a whole, but he slammed the white race more mercilessly than he ever condemned any other race. Sadly, the cynical and sarcastic Mark Twain can never be fully understood because only he knew what thoughts he was trying to convey.
A satirical point that the author talked about briefly was Weaver's choice to not read the short, original novel, but the even shorter novel summary.
