What are jaguars ? Jaguars are one of the 5 species of big cats. They also have retractable claws. A black panther are really black coated jaguar. These rare animals . The jaguar is a big cat. It is the only big cat species that can be native to America . The jaguar is the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion, and the largest cat breed in America. They have spots, including black panthers, which you can see there spots under their black fur. They are carnivorous and will eat many animals. Jaguars actually like water and use it while hunting for some animals, which could be fish, turtles, or caimans—small, alligatorlike animals , and sometimes even alligators themselves . On the endangered list they are near threatened , though population is decreasing because of habitat loss, hunters ( they have a prized skin ) , Ranchers and farmers, too, because they sometimes eat cattle ( cows ) ,sheep, and chickens. At best, only an estimated 15,000 jaguars remain in the wild. National conservation efforts have been successful at protecting a small population of 80 to 120 cats in the remote mountains in Mexico ,bordering Arizona. This population is the largest of three known to remain in Sonora ( the mountain ) , and is the last hope for recovery of jaguars in the United States. Jaguars are not as endangered as you would think. Though there population are decreasing, 15,000 is not badly threatened. It is illegal to hunt or kill a jaguar. They are mainly hunted for their prized fur and skin. Some emperors of China paid big money for the skins of these big cats and other animals like it, such as the lion and the tiger, which the jaguars are related to. Sometimes if a hunter tries to kill a jaguar it could be recorded on new cameras that are hidden in places such as national parks, which are protected areas in america made to protect and preserve nature , and the animals in it.
