Missed appointments are a huge issue in the Army. A missed appointment affects the readiness of both individual Soldiers and their supporting units. The first and most obvious detriment to the readiness of a Soldier with a missed appointment is the ever-present threat of UCMJ action taken under article 86, Absent Without Leave. To be charged under article 86 of the UCMJ you merely have to be not present at the given place of your appointment at the specified time. Receiving an article 15 for the above charge can have a domino effect on both the Soldier’s professional and personal life. The detriment to the mission this causes was shown by the disappearing of a UH-60 “Black Hawk”. I like to refer to the UH-60 as the Army’s flying boner of death The Warrant officer he spoke to in the AFN announcement said that the Blackhawk costs the same amount as all the missed appointments in a year. The lack of having a Black Hawk around could mean the life or death for a Soldier, squad, or unit. The loss of a Soldier could have an immeasurable impact on the readiness of a unit depending on rank, position, and if they were having sexual relations with anyone. I know that my blow up doll Sally would miss me immensely. Drawing back down to a much more localized viewpoint, missed appointments cause all kinds of problems for a company sized element. Between a Soldier and their direct supervisor time is wasted on counselings for the missed appointments and the carrying out of any corrective actions. This wasted time could have been used to plan and/or execute the necessary training for an event, exercise, or even deployment. On a lighter and much brighter side of this situation, missed appointments are becoming less of a problem each year now. This drop in missed appointments can be accredited to the many systems put in place to avoid Service Members missing appointments. The implementation of the missing appointment lists has been asset to commands in the identifying and correcting the misbehavior of these degenerate Service Members. Now overwhelmed with the endless negative possibilities that can stem from missing appointments Service Members could end up on two sides of the coin. One they could be fearful of the multiple repercussions and fix the degenerate behavior immediately. Two they could become so overwhelmed with shame and self doubt that they turn to a life inundated with nights filled with booze and drugs until they ultimately fall victim to their own hand or another preventable accident. If the Service Member is still in the department of defense now has to take care of that Soldier’s effects and family if they have one. Financially they cover the benefits for the Soldier’s death and now need to find a new recruit to effectively take his place. The Army now spends hundreds of thousands of dollars to train a new Service Member to take
