Nicholas being the fifth son of his family couldn’t inherit his family’s estate, leaving him to join the military and leave Elizabeth and his child. The timing during this era was a bit hard for Trist, her child, and her husband since the start of the revolutionary war started in 1775. This news doesn’t sit well for Trist and her husband since he is British. Later Trist’s husband traveled to secure some land, and Trist stayed behind with her son since it was too dangerous to travel due to the Revolutionary War.

Susie then observed her mother put her jacket on and Susie’s face turned from smiling to sad as she realized that her mother was going out. Molly had sat for Susie many times in the past month, and Susie had never reacted like this before. It also contains many themes such as dysfunctional families, insensitive men, and negligent parents that are seen in modern life. The life of Anne Ellis is relatable. Her life is relatable to modern day life, however, very different.

Once upon a time a beautiful girl sat on the floor in the school library and read Romeo and Juliet, which happened to be one of her favorite works of literature. This girl’s name was Octavia, and even though she was quite short, she Was louder than anyone else in her grade. She had short brown hair, which always ended up in front of her face, and emerald green eyes. Octavia was also quite thin and scared herself sometimes because she was the only person she knew that weighed less than 110 pounds.
Also the narrator is not the only one coming to terms with their identity. Her little brother Laird is developing a desire to do the masculine things around the house. The narrator overhears her mother talking to her father, saying, “Wait till Laird gets bigger you will have some real help.” This represents the family’s characteristic expectations of Laird to follow in his father’s footsteps. “The girl” obviously sensed their higher expectations for Laird and her jealousy began to show. She once made Laird climb the ladder to the top beam, believing that he would get in trouble. But, when her parents arrived it was the narrator that was in trouble, her parents yelling, “Why weren’t you watching him.” This shows the double standard between genders in their family and in the general public. She shared a room with her brother, and at night after he fell asleep, she would stay up and tell her stories. In these stories she would imagine herself as a hero, she was brave and spirited and everyone admired her. These stories represented the woman that she wanted to become; powerful and independent, which was the complete opposite of the stereotypical “girl”, which her family wanted her to become. As time grew on, society discovered the true potential of women, and today, women play a large role in politics and in everyday life, but they still carry the stereotypical role as homemaker and mother. Elizabethan England was a male dominated society ruled by a powerful woman, Queen Elizabeth I. She made powerful decisions, such as establishing the English Protestant Church, while most other women made little to no decisions in their life. Besides being a mother and wife, English drama and poetry was an outlet for their restrained social life. Women had a strenuous everyday life due to their few rights, arranged marriages, and inferiority in politics, education, and their occupation.
Throughout that seemingly long year, my mother began to watch me. She noticed that I struggled during cheering events when they would call Shayla and Alex’s names, recognizing them as sisters, and not calling mine with them. Dealing with not knowing who I was and grieving the loss of my father, seemed to me like this grief and anger was never ending.
