242 Words1 Page

Slavery is justifiable because it increased production. It increased the numbers of hands therefore increased labor. The cotton gin, an invention by Eli Whitney, made the South more reliant on cotton than tobacco. The growth of cotton industry did increase revenue, but also dependence. The cotton gin also increased the number of slaves in the U.S. Without slaves, the South would not be able to keep up this up. The owners did not have to pay slaves. The money, instead of going to labor, was used in other ways. It was used to pay taxes which increased the Southern government or buy land to boost status. Slaves were set to be the lower class on which the middle and upper class could use to grow. Socially slaves were "the bottom of the totem pole."
