Macbeth Essay Shakespeare is known for writing plays with intricate plots and very well developed characters. In Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s final plays, Shakespeare did just that and he did it well. One major topic of discussion about Macbeth is was Macbeth good or evil. However, Macbeth is most definitely evil, he let ambition take control over him, he threw away his morals for power and he killed innocent people to further himself as king. Throughout the play Macbeth quickly devolves from a noble leader to a ruthless tyrant who kills people that trusted him and helped him throughout his life. In literature, "evil often triumphs but never conquers." By definition, a triumph is only short- term. For example, something short- term would be an achieved title, a victor in a battle, or a winner in a game. These three things are only temporary, as triumphs usually are in novels. By definition, when something is conquered, it remains conquered perpetually. Usually the evil force is unable to conquer, because of the opposite side's mentality. Because of these definitions, this statement is showing that even though evil characters or actions prevail in battles or events, the feat would not last forever, especially in the hearts and minds of the opposite side. I agree with this statement because there is proof that this is true in novels that I have read. Many novels have this common theme: good versus evil. This theme is unquestionably shown in two works, Macbeth and To Kill A Mockingbird.
The character Macbeth displays through his actions that ambition brings out the worst in him. After the Witches tell Macbeth that he will be king, Lady Macbeth tries to persuade him into killing King Duncan. Macbeth contemplates whether or not he should kill Duncan. William Shakespeare’s Macbeth tells the story of a general who commits regicide in order to become king. Early in the play, Macbeth is conflicted as to weather or not he wants to kill his kinsman the king. In the first two acts Macbeth is not portrayed as a ruthless killer; he is a sympathetic character who succumbs to the provocation of his wife and a prophecy foretold by three mysterious witches. In contrast, Lady Macbeth is a manipulative, immoral woman. Her ambition is so strong that she is willing to do anything to see her husband succeed. However, in the third act things begin to change. The death of the king and lord and lady Macbeth’s rise to power catalyze profound transformation in their personalities.
The heroic loyal character of Macbeth is forced into a internal battle to decide between ambition and loyalty to his king. Macbeth overcomes the evil within him, though Lady Macbeth crushes his thoughts of loyalty to the king by calling him a coward or threatening his manliness. Macbeth allows the evilness to grow within him, which allows ambition to take control of his life. Due to the evilness that has started to control his life he prepares to kill the man who has given him everything to his credit, to fulfil his ambition, and to become King.
Good vs. Evil in Macbeth The good characters in Macbeth are less interesting than the evil ones. Everybody has an evil seed planted in them. Only the really evil person acts on them and commits something morally wrong. Like a Macbeth. When Macbeth first received the prophecies, he actually considered them.
When the play started Macbeth was a very loyal person towards the King, therefore the King treated Macbeth like a son. The king tells Macbeth that he is in great debt to Macbeth and there is no amount of money or land to repay Macbeth for his services. Macbeth responds to the King telling him that all he wants is for the King to accept his services and duties to his throne and kingdom (Act I, scene IV). Macbeth shows a great deal of friendliness when he invites King Duncan to his house (Act I, scene VI ). Macbeth is thoughtful and very compassionate in the way of the king but without the King's knowledge he has a plan to kill the King while the King is sleeping.
In Macbeth, the character of Macbeth has a. firm and correct grasp of self-knowledge, and a well developed concept of the universe and his place in it. He willfully disregards his own moral thoughts and institutions. According to Bernard McElroy, "more than any other Shakespearean hero, he [Macbeth] has a perfectly clear concept of who he is and where he stands --- and it is exactly this perception that torments and spiritually destroys him"(330). Macbeth is strongly impelled to evil but he also abhors evil. It is this that causes Macbeth to abhor himself. The play explores the tensions between Macbeth's proneness to evil and his abhorrence to evil. Macbeth is a tragic hero because he becomes caught in tensions between his criminal actions and the reaction of his conscience. Had Macbeth committed the deeds without any remorse, he would have been simply an evil monster, without any hope. But it is his conscience about evil that makes him tragic. Through Macbeth's actions, Shakespeare is able to depict the nature of evil as being: lusftul, deceptive, tyrannical, and disruptive to family.
In Macbeth, the protagonist, Macbeth, initially starts out as good. He is regarded as a war hero and is known for defeating a traitor. Although as the book progresses he is told a prophecy that says that he will become king. His wife, Lady Macbeth believes that they should take it into their own hands to fulfill the prophecy. She convinces Macbeth to murder the king by stating, “When you durst do it, then you were a man; / And to be more than what you were, you would / Be so much more the man” (Shakespeare 1.7.56-58). Lady Macbeth is able to persuade Macbeth into murdering the king by using his pride against him. She says that he will not be a real man until he murders the king. Towards the end of the play, Macbeth becomes ruthless and completely dependent upon the prophesies of the witches. He feels invincible while he is under their influence. People begin to speculate about what really happened concerning the murders. Macbeth becomes a merciless tyrant who will kill anybody who gets in the way of what he wants.
The play, Macbeth is brimming with characters that demonstrate the wickedness in human nature. As soon as Lady Macbeth receives Macbeth’s letter she pronounces that, ‘the raven himself is hoarse that croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan.’ Her mind immediately jumps to murder. Her evil nature is blatant from the very beginning of the play. Even though Macbeth appears to be a kind, noble person with good morals, his inherent evil is also quick to appear. Three unreliable prophesies were all that was needed to reveal his vile, villainous nature. His initial goodness was just a thin veil that hid his intrinsic evil. Once that veil was removed, Macbeth did everything that was necessary to maintain his level of power. When faced with moral dilemmas, he chooses the unethical choice. He slaughtered his king so that he could gain power. He ordered the murder of his best friend so he could maintain that power. He instructs murderers to kill an innocent child, out of mere spite. All with little to no hesitation. Through the actions of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, the playwright is warning us that our evil is just beneath the surface. Shakespeare knew that we needed a strong message about corruption, betrayal and power. He knew we have it in us to be truly evil- that we are not so different from Macbeth. Macbeth’s life is a tragic story about how he was deceived and molded into an evil man. His evil, sparked by lady Macbeth, began with the murder of king Duncan. Macbeth’s heart couldn’t handle the sin but Lady Macbeth forced him to change his mind. Macbeth’s evil was a result of his overconfidence, guilty conscience, and his human nature, all of which are traits that could be seen in any person in search of power.
Evil is a destructive force; it causes harm to those who embrace it and their victims. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the protagonist Macbeth and Lady Macbeth fall into the hands of evil. Evil is what drives people to commit unnatural actions of destruction. Macbeth succumbs to evil through his fatal flaw, greed, and it causes him to disrupt the chain of being. When Macbeth willingly murders, massacres, lies and deceives, he loses his heath and sanity. Evil corrupts everything it touches, and Macbeth decides to be evil's servant. But, when Macbeth embraces evil, it corrupts him, and it ultimately destroys him as well. Lady Macbeth is a victim of Macbeth's fatal flaw, since she is drawn in, and becomes greedy for power herself. She pushes Macbeth into destruction when she adds the small touch that plunges Macbeth into a chain of murder, destruction, and lying followed by the loss of their sanity and health. After Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are well into the depths of corruption and greed, it is clearly seen that their guilt will haunt them for the rest of their lives. The harm they have caused others will be returned to them as revenge and they have lost their sanity in order to gain power. The fate of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth clearly illustrates that to embrace evil is to negate our own need for order and well being.
Throughout the play of Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is supposed to be a likeable character until he kills the king. By committing this heinous act, Macbeth instantly becomes a villain and continues to commit murderous acts, all stemming from his first terrible mistake. One of his motives consists of choosing power over integrity, therefore he kills the king. Another reason why Macbeth is a villain is because he continued to kill innocent people to hide his doings. Lastly, since Macbeth is a villain and murderer, he deserves to be condemned and disdained.
William Shakespeare utilizes literary techniques such as symbolism, imagery, soliloquies, asides, and irony to explore the themes of Good vs. Evil and Suffering in his play Macbeth. He employs these literary techniques to convey meaning, greater the effect of language, bring the audience into the mind of a character, and evoke emotions in the audience such as surprise or humour.
Macbeth started off as a loyal, humble, and honest individual. As the plot progressed, and the witches came into play, Macbeth started to morph into a character that would not hesitate to murder someone as prestigious as a King or someone as kind as his closest friend. We witnessed a complete change of heart from Macbeth, as his greed and lust to become King changed his attitude and outlook on life. All these atrocious actions by Macbeth come back to haunt him, as he becomes the one being betrayed, and justice is served to Scotland.
