In Macbeth, the protagonist, Macbeth, initially starts out as good. He is regarded as a war hero and is known for defeating a traitor. Although as the book progresses he is told a prophecy that says that he will become king. His wife, Lady Macbeth believes that they should take it into their own hands to fulfill the prophecy. She convinces Macbeth to murder the king by stating, “When you durst do it, then you were a man; / And to be more than what you were, you would / Be so much more the man” (Shakespeare 1.7.56-58). Lady Macbeth is able to persuade Macbeth into murdering the king by using his pride against him. She says that he will not be a real man until he murders the king.
