A villain is a person who is the opposite of the stories character. We have seen villains in action movies, dramas, in life and even the bible. A villain many times doesn't have the best interest of others but instead for him. He will sacrifice this happiness and safety of others to please himself. When I think of villains I think of King David from the Bible. David was King of the Jews. He was a mean after God's own heart. David made many mistakes in life ranging from murder to the theft. He had many wives. He was a poet, musical inspiration and leader of the Israelites. David had many good and bad characteristics of himself. He wanted to do well and please everyone. But at times he would fall short in order for his self-gain.
Literary villains are all around us. For instance, Voldemort from Harry Potter and Darth Vader from Star Wars. What makes a villain? They will go through anyone or damage anything to reach their goal. No matter how small or how tall they are, anyone can be a villain.

This fiction story would not have a backbone without Ursula and her evil appearances, personality, and abilities. There are many things that make a good villain, but I'd have to say that Ursula from the sea has the best villainous qualities.
Firstly, David believed that he needed to get his butt kicked and do things he didn’t want to do. David wanted to do this because he was proving to himself and others that he was not that same little boy anymore. For example, Picasso Basquiat, YouTube contributor, discovered in David’s interview that one day when David came home from work that he saw Navy Seals on the TV. This inspired him to join the Navy. Therefore, even though David hated running, jumping out of air planes and shooting guns he still joined to better himself. Secondly, David was always brutally honest with himself. For instance, Basquiat explained that David had struggled with obesity and many times he weighted over three hundred pounds, but before David joined the Navy he lost over 100 pounds in two months. Thus, David told himself he was fat and decided he was going to change that. Thirdly, David never forgot all his struggles or let them hold him back. For example, Basquiat found out that David created what he called a cookie jar in his mind. This cookie jar consists of all David’s struggles and achievements. So when David is struggling he just stops for a second, looks in his cookie jar and this motivates him. For all these reasons, David is truly a master of self-improvement as well as pushing his

The heroes usually have similar characteristics as one another. For example the heroes are usually brave, muscular, good looking, and fairly popular. On the other hand you have villains. Villains are usually brave as well; however they usually have some kind of deformity such as the villain in spider man. They have different beliefs than that of most other people. These are more modern villains, back in Shakespeare’s time villains were just normal people. Examples of these characters are Lago from Othello, this is a story where Lago makes a plot to take down Othello’s girl because he can’t have her so he makes a plan that will make her lover kill her. Another example of old villains is Claudius from Hamlet. Claudius is the King’s brother. Claudius secretly kills the king, takes his crown and causes a variety of problems. Last is Oberon from Mid Summer Nights Dream is Oberon. Oberon is another villain that causes problems by trying to punish his wife for her disobedience. These three characters are similar yet different. Besides the fact that they are all Shakespeare characters they are still very similar. Two ways that these characters are the same are their place in society and their talking skills, however they are different because of their motives.
According to Webster’s dictionary, the definition of ‘villain’ is “a character in a story, movie, etc., who does bad things” (Merriam-Webster). In John Webster’s play, The Duchess of Malfi, the plot line revolves around a duchess and her two brothers. The Duchess of Malfi is a very twisted and complicated story where the characters are not as they seem. One of the most significant parts of the story line is that the characters that appear to be the villains are not actually the villains. This makes the story complex, but eventually ties it together in unexpected ways. When first reading the play, it is easy to come to the conclusion that the duchess’s two brothers, The Cardinal and Ferdinand, are the villains. However, the Duchess lies and manipulates those closest to her for her own selfish gain. The Duchess is deceitful when she hides her marriage and hides her children even though she knows the drama it will cause in her family, which makes her the true villain in The Duchess of Malfi.
