Hey everyone let’s put our feet in Jocasta shoes right quick you can hop out at any time you feel you are ready. Jocasta was a queen in Thebes that had a bad secret or oracle. Jocasta was a women that fell in love with a man that tried to beat fate and soon she tried to do the same thing. Jocasta was married to Laius and they had a child named Oedipus. Jocasta got Laius drunk and soon was pregnant and Laius didn’t want to have children because of his fate. Laius stabbed Oedipus and had him put on a by a shepherd mountain. A messenger came and picked up Oedipus and gave it to a king and queen which was Polybus. Polybus raised Oedipus as his own so Oedipus didn’t know his true mother and father. Laius oracle was that his first son will kill him so he tried to beat the oracle by getting rid of Oedipus. You can never beat fate. Oedipus was a good person but Jocasta thought that he should have stopped when the messenger said that Polybus was dead. Oedipus couldn’t stop after he found out that Polybus wasn’t his real father. Jocasta knew the truth after the messenger went back to the day he got Oedipus off the mountain and gave him to the king and queen as a gift. Jocasta didn’t won’t everyone to find out so she tried to convince Oedipus to just leave him alone. Jocasta was very respected so having incest in the midst of her royalty will just be a down fall to her royalty. Jocasta was focused on what the people will think or say about her. So when Oedipus got the truth from the shepherd it was a downfall to Jocasta life because people was going to get the impression she knew the whole time and she didn’t want to say anything. Also she was probably ashamed about what she let Laius do to Oedipus. Lastly if she would of just been obedient to the oracle none of the things that happened never would have

    First off, Teiresias is hinting at the fact that Oedipus’ relationship with Jocasta is a “sinful union” (Sophocles 36). Oedipus does not take the warning of Teiresias seriously instead he continues to insult Teiresias. Oedipus’ inability to face the truth will result in him being banned and blinding himself for his ignorance. Similarly, Jocasta attempts to prevent Oedipus from gaining knowledge by explaining that “[i]t makes no difference now” (Sophocles 55) and to “[f]orget” (Sophocles 55) what has been told to him. Jocasta not only tries to stop Oedipus from learning the truth, she also tries to stop herself from verifying the truth, this later results in her unfortunate suicide.
