Deciding whether or not getting a college education is necessary can be complicated. This is because there are many factors that come into play when investigating if a college education is worthwhile. For example, the type of career a person wishes to pursue; how much he or she will ultimately pay for college; and where he or she will live after graduation can all influence the value of his or her degree (Papandrea, 2017). If a student wants to work in a trade (e.g. plumbing or construction) traditional college may not be the most suitable choice. A college education can be an investment that is worthwhile because it can help an individual to attain a higher salary along with better life skills (Study.com, 2003). However, the question of whether college is really worth the time and money is still significant. There are advantages as well as disadvantages to going to college. Some advantages include:
• Jobs are increasingly requiring college degrees.
• College graduates have greater employment opportunities.
• Young adults learn interpersonal skills through attending college.
• College graduates attract higher-paying employers.
• College exposes students to diverse ideas as well as people.
• Earning a college degree is a major life achievement.
• Research has shown that college graduates have higher employment rates, greater salaries, and additional work benefits than those without a college education (ProCon.org, 2017).
Some disadvantages include:
• Student loan debt is crippling for many college graduates, which can force college graduates to live with their parents and delay marriage, financial independence, and other adult milestones.
• A lot of college graduates are employed in jobs that do not require college
The experience college can give is remarkable. College is a valuable experience because individuals who attend will have a lower chance of being unemployed, will be in better health, and paying off debts will be possible! Imagine telling that to a student who just finished four years of hard, grueling, expensive work; or, even worse, a parent who paid for their child to finish that same grueling work. But, in some ways, that statement can’t be any further from the truth. College can prepare a student for life in so many more ways than for a career. However, in the way that college is supposed to prepare soon-to-be-productive students, that statement could be right on. As a student myself, I’ve found college to be a little bit of both. I often find myself asking, "How will this help me later in life?" But, then again, college gives me more control over my life and where I want it to go. College makes students see life as a young adult because the student’s parents are not around while they are enrolled at a university.
