Topic4: The attitude as a viewer

Nick’s “NippleJesus” describes different interpretive community’s attitude to

a controversial artwork. And the author uses irony way to narrate an

interesting but thought provoking story. From the protagonist Dave, the

“nutter” Lisa and the artist behavior and words, I can see they hold various

belief about art. All of their belies represent a group, I could not judge they are

right or false. However, I can divided which one’s opinion is similar to mine.

Dave, the protagonist, who has the most complex and fascinating

personality that lead the story goes a tortured way. From Dave’s words and his

job, as a bouncer, I suppose that he is not good educated person. His attitude

As he said: “…Because it makes you think, and I don’t often

think about things like that. I haven’t been anywhere near Jesus since Lisa’s

sister got married three years ago.” Clearly, Dave is not the person who has

religious. Besides, he is also holds a wired opinion that he would like to

support the traitorous art works. From he thought: “ Because that is offensive,

isn’t it, a Jesus made out of nipple? That’s out of order. In this story, there are

many ideas intertwined in Dave’s mind, so he changes his attitude many

times by different reasons. Overall, I believe that Dave is a easily change

mind person. And if without other influence factors, Dave’s belief on art is just

because it is thoughtful and traitorous.

Lisa, as Dave’s wife, holds a opposite belief to Dave. She thinks the

NippleJesus is a awful artwork. As the text shows: “ …she said it was

disgusting, and how come it was on the wall in a famous gallery.” From the

story, Lisa even does not see the real art work herself. But she set herself

against NippleJesus; so I can see that her belief of art is the artworks must
Therefore, Martha is an artist who think the art should have a provoke

and interaction with viewers.

As for me, Martha’s belief is the closest to mine. But there is a little different between mine and her opinion. I believe that art have to have a interaction

with people, but more importantly, art also can influence people. That is

reason why we create the artwork. Last year, I have seen an news on the

Internet. The label said: The crazy artist’s freak artwork. Then I searched the

artwork create by Maurizio Cattelan who always made irony and controversial

pieces. This untitled work was using fabric and steel to made three boys hang

on the tree.

At first, I was shocked by this piece, it is so tragedy that three child hang on

the tree. I thought most of people would feel disgust, uncomfortable and

oppression. However, after a few minutes, I felt I respect for this work and the

artist. Admittedly, it is an unique work of art, it makes lots of people debate.

Then I think the artist is brave and clever, because he wanted to take a risk to

impel people to think about the children suicide and safety problem. Is it

disgust? Yes, it is! Is it makes you uncomfortable? Yes, It is! Is it makes
