Introduction:
National Council Against Smoking (NCAS) director Dr. Yussuf Saloojee said: “Smoking remains a leading cause of premature, preventable, death in South Africa. Tabacco kills 44 000 South Africans every year. (Three times more than motor car accidents.)”
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) tobacco kills half of those who use it. It is estimated that about 700 million children inhale air polluted by tobacco smoke. Concerns around second-hand smoke have played a central role in debates over the harms- causing diseases, disabilities or even death-and legislations of tobacco.
Reading the above it is clear that second-hand smoke causes many of the same diseases as direct smoking do, such as cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer and respiratory diseases.
The good news however is that the new smoking law in South Africa focuses, amongst others, on the protection of young children from second-hand smoke exposure.
Some of these laws include:
• No Smoking within five meters of an entrance.
• No smoking is allowed, in a car, when there is a passenger under the age of twelve present.
• Cigarettes are not to be purchased by any person under the age of 18.

Terminology:
Smoking: Is a practise in which a substance, example tobacco, is burnt which after the smoke is inhaled.
Second-hand smoke (SHS): Is...

However there is hope, from a legal point of view it seems like the law is on the youth’s side for a change and is trying to protect their bodies and their future. So if adults fail to understand the importance of a smoke-free environment I hope the law will take its place and force it upon everyone.
