Most people think of a nurse manager as a person who just schedules the nursing staff, but they do so much more than what meets the eye. Nurses have a broad spectrum of issues they are responsible for on a day-to-day basis. To narrow this down, they are mainly responsible for employment and maintenance of the nursing staff and overseeing them. They also collaborate with doctors, and assist patients and their families. Another big part of their job is to manage finances and oversee paperwork, such as medical records and disciplinary actions. As a nurse manager, one has to be fast-paced, organized, and behind-the-scenes (Nurse Manager, n.d.). It is how the business chooses to effectively handle/resolve this conflict that makes them successful. During my interview with Andrea she could not emphasize enough how important effective communication is. She shared a recent scenario with me. The patient had experienced a very complex operation involving many complications the patient had to undergo. This is a prime example of why communication is very essential when dealing with problems that arise that are unintended. Dr. Hunyadi is the sole governor of the unit. Andrea writes up policies, and then refers them to Dr. Hunyadi to sign off on them. They must match the AAAC, making them certified and credible. The staff has a say in policies on their unit because it falls under the shared governance regulations. This type of governance has an effect related to the assigned cost center. It makes for more cost effective decisions because the staff has input into new equipment and procedures that will be instituted on the unit.
