1. Inter- professional education or IPE is essential in today’s growing health field. IPE is the act of students from different health related professions coming together to study. This type of education facilitates the collaboration of multiple professions in interprofessional practice, in turn improving health outcomes for patients in interprofessional care. Research is limited on the effectiveness of IPE relating to the changes in a patient’s outcomes when its used.
A meta-analysis entitled “Interprofessional education: effects on professional practice and healthcare outcomes” located in Cochrane, discusses the effectiveness of interprofessional education or IPE in comparison with profession-specific education and the comparison of IPE with no educational intervention. The studies concluded that IPE helped in patient satisfaction, collaboration of teams in the emergency department and the operating room resulting in lowered error rates. It also caused better diabetes care. Lastly it assisted in the maintenance of patient care in domestic violence cases and mental health cases. In addition, four of the articles stated they had mixed positive and neutral outcomes and four stated IPE had no impact on practice or patient care. Due to there being no studies comparing IPE to a particular profession education, the understanding of interprofessional interventions are limited. I side with the importance of interprofessional education in attaining a cohesive collaboration among multiple professions in order to help in giving patients the best form of care possible. It allows for the sharing of expertise and differences of opinion among different professions. Having teams that collaborate causes a decrease in error rates making it a good option for any hospital.
