A Look at Interprofessional Care

What is interprofessional education? Interprofessional education (IPE) refers to the collaborative studies of two or more different health or social care students, with the aim of communication and mutual benefit providing an improved outlook on patient-centred care. This process ultimately leads to a complexation of advantages and disadvantages, pros and cons, with the hope of the benefits greatly outweighing the flaws.
Throughout this training, one comes to both understand and appreciate the other significant roles played by other healthcare providers in a healthcare setting. They help patients cope with the diagnosis, give medications, monitor their health frequently and sometimes assist them on how to manage their own health and provide support.(2) Pharmacist: Pharmacists, also known as legal drug dealers, are responsible for giving the patient the correct and safe dose of a medication. They work in hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes and pharmaceutical organisations. Pharmacists prescribe, monitor, document and dispense medications. They clarify to patients on any precautions needed while taking the medications and explain any methods of administrations. The co-operative relationship between pharmacists and doctors is important when taking the patient’s drugs history and to minimise prescription errors.(2)(3) Physiotherapist: Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals that treat patients who have disabilities in moving or performing activities on a daily basis.

Teamwork: The Main Skill needed for IPC As we have previously outlined, there are many different professional members in the healthcare field. Each and every one of them have a specific role and responsibility to the patient as they play a vital role in the patient's health and their overall plan of care. In order for the patient to receive the best possible treatment, and to ensure high quality care, each health professional must work collaboratively with other members of the team and have mutual respect for each profession in the team as this promotes equity. Teamwork within the team originates from an understanding and appreciation of the roles as well as the contributions each profession brings to the care of the patient. All parts of the team share a common goal and commitment to serving the patient and working towards the goal of improving the patient’s quality of life. A patient in many senses is not seen as a clinical presentation and a single straightforward diagnosis. Therefore, multi-disciplinary teams are set up that are uniquely patient orientated.
