According to Repko, integration literally means, “to make whole”. Repko further defines integration as the process by which ideas; information and theories from two or more disciplines are used to solve a complex issue. The demonization of Arabs and Muslims in the Western media is an ongoing issue that has created many racial and ethnic stereotypes over the years. Interdisciplinary brings together two important parts. Inter means two or more and disciplinary refers to a specialization in a particular field of study (Repko). The phenomena of sociology according to Repko are the social nature of societies and of human interactions within them.

Repko defines epistemology as the theory of knowledge and the branch of philosophy that explains how one knows what is true and how one validates the truth. Both political science and sociology fall under the social science category. Therefore, they both share common epistemologies. The social science disciplines embrace more than one epistemology. Political science tends to embrace more of a rationalist epistemology approach. Political science scholars study belief, purpose, intention and meaning as important elements to help explain the political actions of human beings (Repko).

Modernist sociology just like political science also embraces a rationalist epistemology approach. In political science postmodernism is used to question people of power and decision-making structures. Although, postmodernism theory is used often it does have limitations and weaknesses. These weakness include; embracing extreme relativism, a postmodern approach to understanding texts can be destructive because it reduces all texts in the same way to the same the conclusions, postmodernists insist that their way of researching an issue is the only right way and that whatever social and political agendas they support are better than the others
