The East is a fictional terrorist group that was maybe up of your average day people. What maybe this movie realistic to me was that they were an eco-terrorist who was starting a war with different organizations that are similar to the problems that we are facing today. To help develop a better understanding of their group we will apply two different theories those being instrumental theory and organization. This will help with the viewing of behavior that goes on in terrorist organizations with terms of two explanations. First being an instrumental theory, the act of terrorism, which is an intentional choice (Crenshaw 1987:13). The second theory, organization, which is a unit of acts to achieve collective values which involve radical changes …show more content…
Those all being people they that each member had somewhat close ties to. Through the instrumental process, the targets of this terrorist group relate to the organization's ideological beliefs (Crenshaw 1987:22). What was shocking was that they didn’t even try to hide their identity. The instrumental analysis of a surprise attack aimed at winning quickly (OZDAMAR 2008:92). Which makes since the way they wouldn’t hide their identities to their targets, especially if they already knew each. By having close ties with the target they would have the element of surprise. Even though the organizational approach assumes that terrorist acts appear inconsistent, erratic, and unpredictable (OZDAMAR 2008:94). Yet this group would take months to plan it. They would even wait a while after their last act to make sure that no one was prepared for it. Eco-terrorism is used as a tactical approach to stopping companies, institutions, organizations, and governments from damaging or altering the environment (Burke and Nilson 2002:3-4). Those making their targets being the head members of the companies as a way to leave their mark. The targets in the movie were the owner of an oil company, McCabe-Fray pharmaceutical company, a plant, and a private sector company. To me, they were just attacking the company because they had personal ties with the problem. Their method was an eye for an eye. So in the end, they would be as bad as the …show more content…
When it came in the outcome of their acts they would go the instrumental approach and use violence in hopes change the companies’ ways (OZDAMAR 2008:98). One thing is for sure that the members didn’t rationally choice their acts. They were all acting a grievance and angry with what the company has done that they didn’t prepare for the outcome. They lost a total of five members, three leaving on their own, one arrested and one died. Four of these members were important to the group. It makes it almost appear that the east will be no more. Looking at the organizational approach must suggest that the terrorist organization’s goal is survival (OZDAMAR 2008:93). When it comes to the end it almost seems like The East leader Benji is more in it for revenge, then for survival even if it means losing members along the way. Since Jane aka Sarah kept the information needed for the last act to herself the rest of the east members have no more targets. Yet they have a hacker in their group that makes it appear that they are looking to meet up with more people to make a new bigger eco-terrorist group. The hacker would also make videos and post them online as proof that it was The East who did it. By taking claim for these acts, the eco-terrorist group acquire the public attention and use that interest to spread their extreme environmentalist ideologies that demand the minimization of the human alteration of the natural environment (Burke and Nilson
Likewise, Goodwin illustrates how the use of categorical terrorism can be seem being used by Al-Qaida during the attacks of 9/11. Nonetheless, it is evident that Al-Qaida is unusual in terms of using terrorism to influence the rise of unity rather than trying to overthrow a standing state. For the purpose of instigating a pan-Islamic revolutionary movement, Al-Qaida tries to unite all Islamic people under one state to develop umma, or Muslim community. The logic of Al-Qaida remained that if their “revolutionaries” could illicit a reaction from the powerful US state, resulting in oppression of the middle-eastern region, that Al-Qaida could, as a result, unite all Muslims to counter this suggested oppression. Although the end goal of Al-Qaida clear failed, it does suggest the organization’s attempt at implementing categorical terrorism.
While terrorism—that is, violence or the threat of violence aimed intentionally at civilians—has been employed since time immemorial as a means of securing political goals, the 1960s ushered in an entirely new form of political violence. Motivated by thinkers like Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, this new breed of terrorism struggled in vain to halt the vehicle of Capitalism: as it was steered by the opulent and sustained through exploitation of a bloodied working class. Significant amongst likeminded New Left groups was the Weather Underground Organization (WUO), which conducted a series of bombings in protest against perceived American injustice. This expression of hostility by student activists, albeit far from a true revolutionary movement, stands out as one of the only so-called "terrorist movements" to consistently attack and antagonize on American soil.
Last but not least, one can also look at the brothers’ acts as acts of terrorism. These murders are not terrorism towards the general populace, but towards those who are criminals, and to those who might become criminals.
These films also use the public’s great anticipation and fear of terrorists in these films to engage people and also the films often cleverly use the publics sensitive fear of modern day terrorism to make the films more serious, ...
There are certain groups of people that cause these events to happen. Because of them, there are people living in denial and people that are being ostracized every day. They do this because they are afraid that if they do not go along with what the majority does, their will be reprisal. Everyone wants to believe that people are basically good at nature. But with the events that occurred in the film, it is easy to see that people are easily influenced and would rather go along with the group than stand out and make a difference.
For approximately the past three decades, a terrorist group has come to plague the world with its activities (Gunaratna, 2002). This group is known as Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda, when translated means “The Base”. It is a terrorist organization that seeks to remove western influence from the Middle East and spread its radical Islamic views. Al Qaeda’s most prominent leader was Osama bin Laden, until his death during a raid upon his compound in Pakistan. The Al Qaeda’s motivation stems primarily from extreme and deeply rooted religious beliefs. Their most used method of attack is through suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices. This organization has also used chemical warfare and at this time is believed to still actively seek to utilize chemical and biological agents as means to battle.
All of the family members of the passengers that were on the flight cooperated in making this movie. The reason why they all agree in cooperating with the movie is because "previous attempts to document the crash focused on just the few passengers who had been able to make calls to their family members." Paul Greengrass went as far as to collect as much information about the flight as possible like "the plane's exact movements in the air, the times and content of phone calls to family members, recordings from inside the cockpit and reaction on the ground from air traffic controllers and the military, as well as details about the passengers' personalities and mannerisms provided by the families." You have to give it up to the director for trying to recreate calamity of the situation as accurately as possible. His hard work payed off when he was nominated for an Oscar for directing this movie. The way it demonstrates terrorism in pop culture is by showing a accurate representation of the events that happened on that fateful day and showing the heroic actions of the passengers trying to overtake the
On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists (with strong ties to Al Qaeda), on four separate planes, slaughtered almost 3000 civilians at the World Trade Center and at the Pentagon ("9/11 Attacks"). Al Qaeda is widely known as the most feared terrorist organization. It is a global Islamic militant organization, and its location cannot be determined because of its secrecy and the fact that its militants operate all over the world. It commits acts that are considered terrorism. Terrorism is the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims (Currie 70). Al Qaeda plans to do just this with the terror that they invoke. Al Qaeda did not start as an organization made for terror. Instead, it started as a legitimate military base for the training of the mujahideen, who were the group fighting against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden started Al Qaeda with the money that his wealthy Saudi father left him when he died, when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan (Moyer). He called the invasion an attack on Islam itself. Soon enough, though, Al Qaeda grew into a group recruiting bloody jihadis, spreading fear, and punishing those against their views. (Currie 70-71)
aims. This is because in most cases, it is the only way they can be
Many analysts, researchers, and professors have tried to define the purpose of terrorism. Some believe that can only be achieved when we know how the mind of a terrorist works. The Encyclopedia Britannica describes terrorism as, “The systematic use of violence or threat of violence by organized groups to achieve specific goals. Terrorist activities may be directed against individuals, organizations or governments. Terrorism is employed by radical groups to obtain concessions from established governments, such as a change in policies unfavorable to them or the release of imprisoned members of their organizations…” (Encyclopedia Britannica. “Terrorism” 1987 T-169)
The topic of my paper is types of terrorism. There are several types of terrorism for which to choose for my paper, state, dissident, religious, left-wing v. right-wing, and international. In this paper I have chosen state terrorism, religious terrorism, and international terrorism as the types of terrorism that I am going to discuss. I will discuss what they are in my own words and give examples of two different groups for each type that represent that type of terrorism. Then I will compare and contrast the three types of terrorism that I chose.
In Module one, I learned that terrorism is a result of physical harm or deadly acts of force with the intent of a political outcome by the use of terror for coercion. There are various types of terrorism such as international terrorism and domestic terrorism. International terrorism occurs outside of the United States with a purpose to influence the policy of a government by intimidation. International and Domestic terrorism both involve violent acts dangerous to human life that violate federal and state laws. Domestic terrorism occurs within the United States with the intention of coercion or intimidation by way of mass destruction, etc. Some forms of terrorism include Improvised explosive devices (IED), kidnappings, suicide bombings and
The members of the aforementioned organizations are primarily peaceful and seek redress via nonviolent means. However, as with any highly charged political issue, the issues that drive these organizations to take to the streets has the potential to attract lone-wolf fringe individuals who may use violence to address perceived injustices. The FBI defines lone wolf attackers as “a single individual driven to hateful attacks based on a particular set of beliefs without a larger group’s knowledge or support” and that “most domestic attacks are carried out by lone offenders to promote their own grievances and agendas”. (FBI, 2009) Furthermore, it is difficult to define, categorize, or pattern such individuals, as they can “run the gamut, from hate-filled

Terrorism is one of the most extensively discussed issues of our time and at the same time it is also one of the least understood. The term itself “terrorism” means many different things to different people, cultures, and races. As a result, trying to define or classify terrorism with one universal definition is nearly impossible. The definition of terrorism used in this research is a reflection of much of the Western and American way of defining it. The definition of terrorism is,
