Regardless of court decisions like the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka U.S. Supreme Court decision, laws and legislations like the Civil Rights Act, The American society yet faces racial inequality. Racism is behavior that is motivated by the belief that one’s own group is superior to other groups that are set apart on the basis of their skin color, social or cultural background (Cambridge Dictionaries.) Institutional racism refers to racism perpetrated by government entities or social institutions such as schools, the justice system or the military (Cambridge dictionaries.) In the U.S, people of color are often seen as criminals or potential criminals, while white people are generally assumed to be Law-abiding citizens. Prejudice eventually becomes stereotypes that are ingrained in the American society, and people believe them to be fact. Institutional racism is different from Prejudice but they do correlate. White American Society which is sometimes mistaken as the whole American society has given attention to issues that interest them, while they dilute the issues of minority races. The idea that hard work pays off can be a myth in black American society because they have to battle institutional racism, prejudice and against the white dominate society. Ask yourself, why minorities fill our prisons- is it because they are inheritably immoral, or because it is easier to convict poor minorities versus a well off white criminal. If Casey Anthony was black, would the jury still find her innocent without a reasonable doubt? Would the Trayvon Martin case be so drawn out if George Zimmerman shot a white unarmed boy? Intuitional racism, prejudice and white privilege exists, so without affirmative action racial minorities are denied these opportunities despite their qualification.
