However, the idea of being successful is interpreted differently by those who carry a different socioeconomic status. This status is based upon one’s social class and their income, which is what gives the term successful such a wide range of definitions. This also often times goes hand in hand with how class attendance and performance is judged by parents of college students. With a higher socioeconomic status comes more money within the family, and in turn causes higher income families to send their kids to bigger and more expensive four-year universities that require more work in harder classes than more two-year community colleges. Harder classes with all the homework thrown on top can make it difficult for anyone from any socioeconomic background to excel, add skipping classes to this equation and it may seem near impossible to excel. This is where the family bank account comes into play. When kids don’t attend class and their grades follow suit by dropping wealthier families have the option to come out and say their kid gave it ‘the good ole college try’ and help finance another path to help them become successful. As for the other end of the spectrum, lower class families are often times putting a first generation college student into a position to help them move up the socioeconomic ladder with a college degree. When thinking about college the same fear is established in just about every student’s mind. How am I going to pay for college? With an increase in college tuition in the past ten years, that question has become more frequent. Whether it is a private or public institution, the price is still no pocket change and how to pay for it has become harder and harder to accomplish. In today’s society, the average person can not get as far as they’d hope without a college education. With that accomplishment of receiving a college education, comes the dreaded loans that some students have and pass on to their children.

While the median inflation-adjusted household income fell by seven percent between 2006 and 2011, the average real tuition at public four-year colleges increased over that period by eighteen percent (1). To prove how rapidly the cost to attend college rose, researchers compared college tuition to the increasing cost of healthcare. Research showed that college tuition increased at twice the rate of healthcare costs over the past twenty-five years. While college tuition rapidly increased, average income fell, which left families in deeper debt with each upcoming year. High tuition costs make getting a college education unattainable for many low and middle income students. Luckily, thanks to an up-and-coming alternative to the typical college experience, there is now a chance for some of these students to pursue their dreams of higher education.

To conclude, my research shows a clear link between parental involvement and children performing better in school. Children who's parents are involved in their education are showing better performance and are achieving higher grades. They also show better behaviour, more enthusiasm, ambition and higher levels of engagement. compared with children who's parent are not involved in their education. My research also shows that parental involvement has great benefits for both children and parents in many ways, so much so that the most effective schools are those who encouraged parents to be involved.
