The movie “Inside Out” is about a little girl named Riley Andersen and within her mind is five personifications of her basic emotions such as joy, fear, anger, disgust and sadness. As Riley grows up, the emotions control her in the headquarters of her mind. Her memories are stored in colored orbs, which are transferred to long-term memory each night through a suction tube. The most important memories are the “core memories,” which are housed in a special memory holder and the memories power up five islands that reflects different aspect of her personality such as Family Island, Honesty Island, Hockey Island, Friendship Island and Goofball Island. While his sisters had an easy time adjusting to the new surroundings, Docter felt he was missed treated constantly by peers. While other kids were interested in sports, Docter sat alone drawing, a hobby that eventually led him to animation. His social anxiety ended by the time he went to high school. In late 2009, Pete saw his teenage daughter going through similar shyness he went through in high school. "She started getting more quiet and reserved, and that, frankly, triggered a lot of my own insecurities and fears," he said. So he started to imagine what happens in human’s mind when does emotion set in, the idea of animating it excited Docter. He began teaming up with a producer, Jonas Rivera, and a secondary director, Ronnie Del Carmen, to research information about the minds of humans, but alongside of them was a psychologist, who studies emotions, named Paul Ekman. Pete saw that fear and surprise was too similar, so he just had five emotions to build the animation around. The success of Pete’s 2009 film “Up” made Pixar all Docter to create another movie to give a more exciting story. “Inside Out” is the first Pixar movie without input from the co-founder and former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs.
