From the very beginning, pit bulls were used as farm dogs, family dogs, military mascots, and all-purpose companions. [slide 3] A. They were originally used to fight bulls, bears, or horses. (1) 1. As time went on breeding changed to fit the specific needs for bull baiting.
2. Bull Baiting became illegal but those who did not want it to end began fighting dogs against dogs in pits at their own homes. (1) a. The Greyhounds and Whippets were, and still are, bred for chasing and killing small prey.(1) b. Just like pit bulls these dogs still make excellent family pets. B. They achieved a very respected position among Americans. a. They were trusted to watch the children while adults worked in the fields. b. The appeared in advertising campaigns, a classic television show, and even showed up on the cover of “Life” magazine three times.(2)

[Transition]:Now that we know a little history of the breed, Ill explain some common misconceptions about them.

II.Many people think they know what pitbulls are all about from what they see and read, when most of it isn't even true. A. Pitbulls are not mean and vicious. [slide 4] 1. They are no more vicious than golden retrievers, beagles or other dogs. a. In a test of many dog breeds, pitbulls consistently had a passing rate that is good or better than the most popular breeds. (1) B. Pitbulls do not have “locking jaws.” 1. There is no difference between a pitbulls jaw and another breeds jaw that makes it able to lock. a. “ We found that the American Pit Bull Terriers did not have any uniques mechanism that would allow these dogs to lock their jaws. There were no mechanical or morphological differences…”(1)
