Women in the Military From 1973 to 2010, the number of women in the military has grown from about 42,000 to 167,000. With more women joining the fighting forces, more questions and concerns have been voiced about women and their place in the military. What are the effects of women in the military? Is it safe for women on the front lines? There is a controversy that is causing people to argue whether or not women should be allowed to serve in combat. Many people think that women should serve in combat for these reasons. Women create diversity and diversity is good, and it should be fair. One of the major reasons is that putting women into the infantry and such will cause more danger to women. Being in the military is rough, it takes a lot of hard work and sometimes a woman's body isn't cut out for it. A marine captain Katie Petronio gave a statement. "I can say from firsthand experience in Iraq and Afghanistan and not just emotion," she wrote in 2012, "that we haven't even begun to analyze and comprehend the gender-specific medical issues and overall physical toll continuous combat operations will have on females."(Kenny) There are a lot of different gender-specific issues that women could run into that would not remotely bother men. Women would be in more danger than men. Another reason why allowing women into the military is a danger to them is because they could be at more risk for rape or other assault. "Moreover, would combat be particularly dangerous for a woman precisely because she would be so unusual,- therefore representing a warped kind of "trophy"? Rape has been well documented as a method of humiliating and controlling civilian enemies, and there seems to be no reason why this would not apply to women in uniform." By adding women into the equation of hard combat, men will divert to their instinct of protecting women. Rather than do their job, they will want to protect the women. There was a study conducted to show exactly how harmful women could be. In the 1990s, John Luddy of the Heritage Foundation wrote of the "common misperception that Israel allows women in combat units. In fact, women have been banned from combat in Israel since 1950, when a review of the 1948 Arab-lsraeli War showed how harmful their presence could be. The study revealed that men tried to protect and assist women rather than continue their attack." (Michaels) This evidence shows that men tried to protect and assist the women and not continue their attack, which not only put them in danger but it overall weakened the force. While women have every right to be in the military, the dangers that can come to them and the dangers they can cause the men will no doubt weaken our forces. "To my mind, it doesn't seem sexist or derogatory to question how differences between the sexes might impact on a dangerous high-intensity situation such as a combat zone. While I wouldn't question female abilities, there's no point refusing to acknowledge how women may have the odds unfairly stacked against them while training, after which they could be more exposed and vulnerable than their male
