Skin, the body's outer covering and the largest organ of the body, could be affected by cancer. Skin cancer, the abdominal growth of skin cells, is a type of disease where cancer cells are to be found in the outer layer of a skin. There are two types of skin cancer malignant melanomas, which are difficult to treat, and non-melanomas cancers, which are certainly curable. Since there is more than one type of skin cancer, you have to know which type you have because it affects your treatment options and your outlook (prognosis) (1). Another alternative for surgery is Photodynamic therapy (PDT) which is the relatively new type of treatment. Using PDT, basal cell is treated using drugs to make skin sensitive to light. This is followed by treatment with a bright light to the affected area so that cancer cells are destroyed. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is best used in cases where the patient needs a lot of surgeries. Large basal cell skin cancers that are not too deep, or where there are several cancers in an area. However, it is not suitable for serious skin cancer because the light cannot penetrate far enough into the skin(3).
