The attempted shoe bomb in 2001, the underwear bomb in 2009, the explosives that were disguised as printer cartridges in 2010: all of these events triggered the need for more security in airports to ensure that none of it ever happened again. Since these major terrorist attacks, airports have turned to full body scanners to make our nation more secure. Full body scanner produce 3D images of the person under the clothes to identify any potential threats. The two main scanners used are the backscatter and the millimeter wave scans. Millimeter wave scanners use a special kind of microwave to detect foreign objects and have no health risks except for the very low amounts of thermal radiation. Metal detectors can only identify if you’ve got something metal on you. The dogs are specifically trained to smell anything and everything for potential bomb threats. Security in airports have multiple explosion detection services that can work like MRI scanners or something closely resembling a metal detector except these scanners are for detecting explosives. Transport security administration (TSA), states that the scanners add another covering of security to keep airports safe. For example, quote “a ceramic knife might not trip a metal detector” end quote and won’t have a scent for a dog to detect (Jansen). Before the new full body scanners, it was very easy to slip something by security if it wasn’t metal and didn’t have a specific scent to it. The list of non-metallic weapons that a terrorist could use, including plastic battery shells with explosives inside and bomb powder hidden on the person itself and knives disguised as everyday things such as keys, a belt, or a pen. The security in airports before the uprising was very poor so either they risked terrorist attacks and threats like they had before, or they had a few upset passengers that were unhappy with the fact of having to go through a full body scan.
