My foot arches are flat, not a fun thing. Having flat arches means more than a bit of a funny walk. It means more than wearing sole inserts. It means a lot more than running around, barefoot and carefree. This is the story of resiliency, pain, and everyday life. Welcome to my world. This isn’t fake. So many people don’t understand why, in physical education, running the daily warmup becomes a struggle. They think, “Oh, she just wants attention.” This is not true. I’d much rather be an ordinary Joe than deal with this. My own family can’t understand what it feels like, unless the develop the condition. These are just some of the difficulties of having flat arches. My feet face towards each other, a consequence of my flat arches. At first, when I was eight, the pain resided in my feet, My toes, my heels and my ankles. Then it progressed to my knees. After many complaints my parents received, they took me to our local physician. They diagnosed me with flat arches and before long I had my very own pair of orthotics sole inserts. One of the sports that my orthotics could not help me in is hockey. I started hockey when I was six, and have been playing ever since. When I play hockey, it feels like my feet are swelling up, and they ache. Badly. Imagine stepping onto the ice. Feel the cool air around you. Skate around for a bit. About ten minutes into playing a great hockey game, it suddenly hurts to put pressure on your feet. You shift from one foot to the other, trying to relieve your pain. It feels like you’ve been walking around the mall for hours, and need to sit down. You skate through the rest of the game in pain, and surprised. Now imagine that feeling every hockey game you play.
