Informative Essay On Ct Scan

In today’s society, it’s much easier to detect and diagnose an illness because of a great medical detection technology: Computed tomography scanning or CT scans. It’s a scanning technology which uses X-ray computed tomography to generate images of internal organs in human body. Because of its accuracy, more and more people choose to use CT scans. According to Bernier and his team’s research (2015), in the USA, “the number of CT scans increased from 2 million in 1980 to about 70 million in 2007” (p116) and this number is still growing. But in fact, CT scanning technology is credited to the use of the X-ray, oddly enough, it’s also criticized due to the X-ray. The reason is “the radiation used in CT scans can damage body cells, including DNA molecules, which can …show more content…

Since the source of cancer is from radiation so it’s obvious the more radiation you take will rise more risks. I’ve mentioned that we are already limit CT scan’s radiation doses. But there is some certain situations need people to do multiple CT scans. Furthermore, “the radiation doses received from CT scans are 100 to 1,000 times higher than conventional X-rays” (Rita 2014). Some of us are actually taking more doses than the normal level.
Overall, most researchers believe there is an increasing in rate of cancer if a person take too much doses or take scans at young age. There are some other ways to diagnoses illness without using CT scans.
Since the possible risk of using CT scans, people should avoid using it unless use of CT is necessary. Without CT scans, there are other non-irradiated alternatives such as ultrasound tomography and MRI tomography can do the work. Both of ultrasound and MRI are widely used in diagnostics. Patients will not be exposure to radiation when to use either of them. MRI scans use radio waves and strong magnets to produce images and ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to produce
