What is information technology? What does it have to do with me and my career? Fortunately there are many different things that this day and age has that were not even thought about when our parent were children. We are so fortunate that times have changed so the opportunity of meeting new people and saving information. The ability to save a significant amount of information and have it all stored in one spot is like nothing else in this world. Technology has been inferior for a while but is slowly taking a hold on today’s lifestyle, now it seems the world is run by it.
Let’s get a little background on the history of Information Technology before we focus on how it will be beneficial to my career life. Information technology has been around for a very long time basically as long as people have been alive, information technology has always been the ways of communicating, weather it may be through technology or not, it was always been available at that point in time. There are four main stages to informational technology that divide up the history. Only now, the invention (electronic devices) and some of the electromechanical age really affects us today, but it is important to learn about how we got to the point we are at with technology today. One thing that I found interesting about my assessment is the fact that under My Interests, "Application of Technology" was 3rd highest on my list. I believe that technology has its perks, but I often find that it can be a hindrance or a crutch or just simply a pain to use. Not to mention, during the IST class last semester, whenever we had to familiarize ourselves with a computer system, I tended to dread those assignments. However, with the everchanging world of business, I know that the use of technology will continue to expand. No matter how I feel about technology, I am aware that I will most likely need to familiarize myself with various computer systems to efficiently complete my job. After taking this assessment, I am reassured by the thought that maybe I have a natural interest in technology, an interest that could help me in the future.

The adage "information is power" can certainly be applied to the marriage of career information with computers. In an era that is characterized by a rapidly changing employment and occupational outlook, the ability to access computerized career information has been empowering to both youth and adults (Bloch 1989; Tice and Gill 1991). Defined as "all that people need to know to make choices and take action . . . in relation to their paid or unpaid occupational activities and in relation to their preparation for these activities" (Bloch 1989, p. 120), career information includes knowledge about occupational areas and specific jobs; information about career preparation and where to obtain suitable education and training; facts about employment, including work environments and appropriate job behavior; job-search skills; and self-knowledge such as individual interests, values, and needs. Computers are an ideal medium for delivering career information because they can present current information objectively in an interactive format that is appealing to many clients (Harris-Bowlsbey 1992).
IT(short for Information Technology) is the study of storing, retrieving, and sending information through the use of systems and databases. There are around three career paths under the branch of Information Technology: Specialist, Project Manager, and Manager. A Specialist can include a developer, systems administrator, supporter as well as a consultant.(Olsen) Depending on the job you have, workers can do a variety of tasks. For example, you could be a software engineer. Software Engineers store information and data for the creation of computer software.(Quinstreet Enterprise) Perhaps you are a computer forensic investigator, you might be researching information that would be useful for investigating a crime. As you can see, there is a great variety in the types of work done in the Information Technology field.
From an early age I have always been interested in the way the business and technology world operates among our everyday lives. Since starting my A levels, the complexities of the business and technology industries have become more clear, the way it is forever changing and adapting to create more paths to success is a feature I can also apply to my own life. I realise that not just academic understanding is needed but motivation, creativity and hard work is needed to flourish. What would life be without technology? In this world that we live in it is impossible to be fully efficient in a business society without having grasp knowledge of information and communications technology. I am now able to choose wisely between different types of technology and am able to distinguish between the different options that I have. I also have a much better understanding of the wide variety of programs that are accessible to me and I am able to use them with a basic understanding of how they work.
Informational technology has helped so many people keep in touch with others, interact with others through social networking, help employees with work or help employers figure out whom their hiring. So how could informational technology help me? In plenty of ways, then not. One being through social, educational, and another being professional. So having all of this technology might be a bit overwhelming, but overall it is helpful to almost everyone. This newer technology today can help so many people with so many different things whether it be talking to your best friend, skyping with your future boss about your future career, spending over eight hours doing research on a paper that’s due in less than twenty-four hours away or just sitting on your computer for hours watching cat videos on the internet. It’s all how you spend and use your time on the internet.
