A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words While most stories are told using only words, there are some that are told through visual novels, comics, or manga. These all involve written words along with illustrations that help to convey a certain feeling or idea with the text. An example of this is the piece “Influencing Machine,” a graphic narrative by Brooke Gladstone and Josh Neufeld, where throughout the piece they use creative illustrations to bring the narration to life, one example being the panel where they depict Nicholas Carr on a jet ski, zipping over a sea of online website logos. This imagery is in line with the text in the panel where he talks about how he once used to a scuba diver who could dive into seas of words. However, now, as
“ The horizon was the color of milk. Cold and fresh. Poured out among the bodies” (Zusak 175). The device is used in the evidence of the quote by using descriptives words that create a mental image. The text gives the reader that opportunity to use their senses when reading the story. “Somehow, between the sadness and loss, Max Vandenburg, who was now a teenager with hard hands, blackened eyes, and a sore tooth, was also a little disappointed” (Zusak 188). This quote demonstrates how the author uses descriptive words to create a mental image which gives the text more of an appeal to the reader's sense such as vision. “She could see his face now, in the tired light. His mouth was open and his skin was the color of eggshells. Whisker coated his jaw and chin, and his ears were hard and flat. He had a small but misshapen nose” (Zusak 201). The quotes allows the reader to visualize what the characters facial features looked like through the use of descriptive words. Imagery helps bring the story to life and to make the text more exciting. The reader's senses can be used to determine the observations that the author is making about its characters. The literary device changes the text by letting the reader interact with the text by using their observation skills. Composers use comprehensive variety of language techniques to engage their audience by creating convincing and extraordinary images. Distinctively visuals are created through the use of extravagant techniques and complex word choice, so it helps the audience to visualize the text and therefore share and also intensify their understanding of the texts. Two short stories composed by ‘Henry Lawson’ that use techniques and word choice to portray distinctively visuals are ‘The Drover’s Wife’ and ‘In A Dry Season’, these two texts are strongly opposite to the visual ‘Flatford Mil’ by English artist John constable. Both ‘The Drover’s Wife’ and ‘In A Dry Season’ use distinctive visuals to intensify the responders understanding of place, the situation of the story, where the stories are set. People, the characters of the story and how they progress throughout the story. Ideas, themes and ideology that the composer is trying to express to his audience. Henry Lawson creates images of isolation, stoicism and the struggles for survival in the unforgiving rural Australian outback in his two well-known short stories ‘The Drover’s Wife’ and ‘In A Dry Season’. On the other hand, the visual, ‘Flatford Mil’ creates images of peacefulness, clamness and freedom through the composer’s use of colours, brush strokes and positioning.
A pattern of repeated words or phrases can have a significant impact in conveying a particular impression about a character or situation, or the theme of a story. In the story "The Storm," by Kate Chopin, and "The Chrysanthemums," by John Steinbeck, imagery is an integral element in the development of the characters and situation, as well as the development of theme.
In traditional writing styles, the main element to give the story meaning is the narrative itself. However, with more modern and distinct styles such as the short stories written where the narrative is no longer the primary stylistic device, but the use of metaphors and distinctive different narrators applies meaning to the stories. The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
The writer uses imagery, because he wants to let the readers into his mind. By describing the scene for the readers, makes the readers fell like they were there. Therefore, it gives us a better ability to emphasize with him.
Piper’s use of imagery in this way gives the opportunity for the reader to experience “first hand” the power of words, and inspires the reader to be free from the fear of writing.
The combination of words and images in contemporary art production is an extremely useful and powerful vehicle for artists to use in order to express their messages. The text can either support the image or contradict the image in order to demonstrate the transparency of either or both elements. Two artists who combine both image and text in their art are well known Australian and New Zealander contemporary artists, Gordon Bennett and Colin Mccahon. “Personal Narratives” is a must see exhibition as it displays Bennett’s and Mccahon’s clever use of both image and text to convey personal narratives. Gordon Bennet is an Aboriginal Australian who uses text to communicate personal issues of racism, Colin Mccahon is an artist from New Zealand who uses text to convey________. These artists have powerful messages to communicate and are doing it in a highly urbane and strong way.
The text also works with the pictures throughout the story. The text is on the right page compelling the reader to turn the page to see what happens next. As Max's imagination grows so do the pictures forcing the text to the bottom of the page. The full page spreads eventually take over the entire page leaving no room for text. The pictures carry on as extensions of the story, working well to continue the story. Finally the story ends on a page of all text. A small tag line that brings closure to the story and Max's adventure. The text as well as the pictures work hand in hand to tell a complete story. Along with the various codes that were used to give depth and understanding to the story, the text positioning worked well to provide direction. Everything worked together to tell a great story.
Illustrations in children's literature have important functions and complex role; that what make critic like Mable Segun argues “Illustrations are literature in their own right whether used by themselves or integrated with written texts” (Segun 3), for Segun illustrations have pictorial language that goes directly to child mind, she thinks pictorial codes better than verbal codes; pre-schools use books with images only for children, for her words make ''vague'' images in children mind (1-2). In Oxford dictionary illustration is a picture or graphic form, and literature is written form or works, that conceded to be superior (Oxford Dictionary).
