The Ancient times have given America lots of ideas about everything; one of the most important influences that they have had on America is idea on physical education and athletics to keep people healthy. America took on gymnastics from the Ancient Greece influences. Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome both gave the idea that there should be physical education among the students. The idea for physical education came from Ancient Greece on how they informed pain, by discipline and obedience. America started swimming because the influence of Ancient Rome who did running, jumping, swimming, wrestling, horsemanship, boxing, fencing, and archery. Women were not allowed to play sports in Ancient Greece but they were allowed to play some in Ancient Rome. Ancient Greece helped put in the beliefs about the human body and physical education that America has. America caught onto the idea that the body must be balanced. Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome both gave the US and the world the Olympic games and greatly influenced them as well, and also other sports.
When European explores founded America they brought with them their influences, which were from Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome had great influences and also invented many athletic ideas into the daily lives of American’s. A big influence that they had was physical education which most schools in America have their students do to stay fit. Overall they have given us a healthy state of mind by keeping the body active and staying in shape at gyms with personal trainers. Horse racing and other sports like swimming, track and field through the ancient foot races, wrestling, and helped transform their ancient sports into new sports. They have also given us the facilities to do our sports in like gymnasiums, and for bigger sporting events they have given America and the world stadiums, for people to come down from everywhere and watch the sports happen and be entertained. They have given America sports and was to stay fit and not only that but for the people who don’t necessarily play or do any athletics a chance to be entertained.
“The athletic craze began in the late nineteenth century when American’s were looking for some recreational activities to add to their daily lives during the Depression. In the cities, industrial wage earners frequented play grounds. They went dancing at the dance halls and had fun at the amusement parks. People that lived in rural areas simply rode bicycles, played baseball or football. “
Since 776 BCE, the Olympics have been a way for people of different cultures to come together and compete in friendly competition. In 1892 the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, although it had been over a thousand years since the last game it still had brought together an assortment of different religions and ethnic groups together. Many factors shaping the Olympic Games reflect the changes that have taken place in our world since the last game in 393 CE in Greece such changes include woman’s suffrage, global economy, world wars, and proving competency.
Athletics were an expression of the philosophical, religious and civic values that were at the very heart of Greek culture. In the world of the ancient Greeks, well-educated individuals were expected to be balanced mentally, spiritually, and physically (http://www.mediaconcero.com/olympic/olympia/ideal_o.php, September 27, 2004). It was felt that athletics aided in the creation of such an individual. Athletic events during this period were not simply displays of physical prowess, but an integration of the facets of Greek culture.
The Olympic games is a series of events that takes place every two and four years that originated in Greece to honor the Greek gods (Cartledge 1). The Olympics is an inspirational contest where many nations of the world come together and compete. This pertains to the athletic competitors who have trained for years to enter the Olympics. This includes swimmers, boxers, hockey players, runners, cyclists, ice-skating, figure skating, and many other sports (Cartledge 2). The Olympics have changed since ancient times because of technology, innovations, and a broader audience.
The ancient Greek Olympic Games are said to be on par with the modern day Olympic Games, despite the cultural intentions they may have. They are basically the same at the core of their institutions. Despite the realized traits of these games, they have been able to create a unifying atmosphere, indirectly causing a pseudo-period of peace for all as the ancient Greeks and the modern world have come together to watch whenever these games appear
American society has been affected over the years due to many people and laws. Athletes and sports have had their share of effect on society as well. Almost three fourths of society has played or watched some kind of sporting event. Where would society be today without sports? No one will ever know, but sports and athletes have affected society in many aspects all over the nation. Sports have brought people in the American society closer together. Some states in America rely on sports to help out with their economy, but sports have also created problems for society. Sports like golf, basketball, baseball, football and boxing all have effected American Society in their ow...
With childhood obesity becoming an epidemic in America, we need methods to help stop obesity in children such as physical activities. Physical activities are not only to help prevent obesity; it can also help students improve on their academics. “Physical education helps the brain function; exercise increases the blood flow within the body and increases the blood volume in regions of the brain associated with memory formation” (Kovar, Susan K at el. Elementary Classroom Teachers as Movement Educators. 4th ed. Boston: McGraw-Hill, 2004. Print.). Children spend many hours of their week inside a classroom, there are activities and lessons teachers can do to help their students become more active. “Physical education and movement are important to start at a young age because children are very active and child obesity is a huge problem these days” (Gaither, Laura, personal interview. October 7, 2013). Having movement and physical activity in the classroom is crucial to elementary school children as it is shown to have a positive effect on their overall life quality. “We know that physical activity is critical…not just for better health but for better academic performance” (Michelle Obama).
In conclusion Greek athletes and athletics have influenced athletics and athletes today in many ways. First, the Greeks created the Olympic Games. Second, the Greeks influenced a lot of brands and companies that are very popular. Last, Greeks influenced many other sports that are played by athletes. The Greeks had a huge influence in modern athletics. Without the ancient Olympics and Greeks we may not have some sports or athletics we do
Proponents of physical education often contend their case with these and other similar arguments, but upon closer examination of the physical education system, its true use and effectiveness are highly questionable. Those who argue that physical education is integral to the nation’s health must reexamine the nation in which we live, a nation in which more than one-third of adults are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pennsylvanian legislation has mandated physical education since 1999, but since 1999, the adult obesity rate has risen by 11%. Regardless of the proponents’ claims, physical education is not having its intended effect on public health. (Note: I am not trying to suggest that physical education is deleterious to public health. I am just showing that physical education has done a negligible job promoting health). Furthermore, physical education consumes an entire class period of a student’s day, a class period which could be spent learning one of many highly important, pertinent 21st century subjects that the Common Core has inexplicably ignored: micro and macro economics, U.S.
The goal of this paper is to inform others of my reasoning why physical educators are important and why it is my dream to become one. There are three main points I would like to discuss: the value of physical education ,being a role model ,and why it is my dream to become one.
Most at times do not really realize how important history and its events greatly influence the way we live and what we do today! Every four years we celebrate the beginning of something that was brought up long ago, the Olympics! This great event in which, now the whole world participates in started way back in the year 776 BC. It started from people playing for the God Zeus to people playing for their country and a medal, the Olympic Games sure did evolve as the time and beliefs changed.
Physical education in school systems is beneficial because it improves students’ health. Without physical education the child’s overall health will decrease. Despite these benefits, some people believe that physical education has no value to children in schools. Physical education is significant in schools because it improves children’s health.
The Olympian games were founded in 776 BC. The Greek people used athletic victory as an outlet for their aggression. In a country filled with civil war this was a way to bind the nation together.
The modern Olympic Games were inspired by the ancient Olympic Games in Greece that ran from 776 B.C. to 393 A.D. They were held in honour of the god Zeus who was the leader of a very popular cult in this period of time in Greece. The Olympics were viewed as a religious practice and as a form of entertainment. Athletes would compete in either wrestling, a pentathlon (the long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, stadion [short foot race], and wrestling), boxing, pankration (a form of martial art), or the equestrian events (Ancient Olympic Games, 2013). All provinces within Greece were allowed to compete in the games with ...
The development of technology has drastically changed the way we look at physical education. Today we have learned that physical education plays a huge role in our youth and making sure they are participating but, technology has contributed to a secular decline in physical activity. Less and less children are participating in physical activity and more in video games and cell phones. Because of this our nation is becoming unhealthy, contributing to doctors prescribing more exercise as a method to becoming healthier. Another point that influences physical education is age, gender, ethnics, education, and income. Many Physical education teachers have to deal with many different children from all different places. It is extremely important that the teacher know where their students are from and how to try to teach them so they understand and can learn like everyone else. Some children may have learning disabilities and the teacher will have to know how to help this student. Some children may get left out or picked on because of age, race, gender, ect. The teacher needs to make sure that they are not left out or picked on so that this will not play a role later in life of not liking physical education and it taking a bigger effect in later life, like becoming overweight, and being afraid of gyms or working out. The history of physical education that came after WWI was greatly needed. Many men during WWI went into war unfit and could not do proper activities because they were not fit to do them, so physical educators developed conditioning programs for armed forces. “After the war, health statistics had later revealed that the nation was in poor shape 1/3 of the men were physically unfit for service” (Wuest and
