Nutrition and diet in inflammatory bowel disease
Introduction
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a collective term used to describe two medical complications of digestive tract or gastro-intestinal tract, which are Crohn’s Disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is major disease affecting about 60 thousand people in Australia, about 1.4 million in United States (US) while in Europe its prevalence is about 2.2 million persons who suffer from these diseases (Kansal, Wagner, Kirkwood & Catto-Smith, 2013; Loftus, 2004 ). Environmental factors are very much importance for prevalence of disease. The strongest environmental factors leading towards the incidence of the disease are smoking and bad or unhealthy eating habits. Apart from this surgical removal of appendix can also be one of the encouraging factor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Ulcerative colitis (CD)
Ulcerative colitis (CD) is inflammation of small intestine, large intestine or sometimes whole colon resulting in bloody diarrhea that accounts for seriousness of this disease if it is prolonged. Ulcerative colitis is not as severe as Crohn’s Disease (CD) so it does not result in fistulas. Fistulas is a term used to describe severe injury of whole or any portion colon. If the Ulcerative colitis (CD) diseased condition persists for a longer duration of time it can be as dangerous as Crohn’s Disease (CD) and it can also require surgical removal of organ. Therefore, it is very necessary to address and control the disease at initial period of time; otherwise it can be very dangerous.

One of the serious diseases of digestive tract is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that is combination of two diseases, are Crohn’s Disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). These diseases are increasing in developed countries due to junk food and lavish style of people. Junk food is difficult to digest and deposit in colon and cause various problems. Among these two diseases ulcerative colitis is less dangerous disease that is a type of severe diarrhea. Crohn’s Disease on the other hand is very dangerous disease that is remittable and leaves very serious effects on health of patients even after the treatment. Enteral nutrition that contains elementary elements is one of the best ways to feed to Crohn’s Disease that can not only stop remittance but also decrease time of hospitalization for the patients after the treatment.
Lupus is inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues and organs, and this inflammation affects many different body parts such as the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. Second is the Celiac disease and it is an autoimmune reaction from eating gluten, and it may lead to damage in the small intestine because this disease attacks the villi, the projections that line the small intestine for protection. The last example is Rheumatoid Arthritis, an inflammatory disorder in which affects many joints, mainly in hands and feet, and then causing your joints to painfully swell and possibly cause bone erosion.
Although I have never been someone who has taken an interest in reading about nutrition and how it affects our bodies, I really enjoyed the book, Eat Dirt by Josh Axe. The author discusses how he took an interest into leaky gut after his mother was diagnosed with cancer a second time and he created a plan to help her eat healthier in order to improve her health. The plan worked wonders for his mother, although he claims the plan won’t cure her or anyone else in her case it was highly effective. Throughout the book, Axe continues to provide the reader with examples of what his patients have suffered from and how, through changing their eating habits, have improved their lives significantly. After each example of patients, the author informs the reader of what leads to leaky gut and ways to combat it. Each chapter expands on the five ways to combat leaky gut by providing examples on the topics such as, what to eat and what probiotics to take for certain conditions. Throughout his

This disease is named after a Jewish man named Dr. Burrill Bernard Crohn (1884-1983) who became interested in the condition as his father, also a Dr, suffered from a disorder of the bowel. He devoted his career to “regional enteritis” the disease that now bares his name. It is necessary to understand the disease to be able to provide care for people who are afflicted by it (de Campos and Kotze 2013). Especially since Crohn’s is a chronic disease or a lifelong affliction it’s important to understand etiology, it’s symptoms, treatments, and to maintain the disease and the psychological well being of the patient managed (Crohn’s...2015).
Crohn’s disease is a chronic disorder of the digestive system. I can affect any area of the gastrointestinal system from the mouth to the anus. Its inflammatory process may spread to include skin, eyes, joints, mouth and sometimes the liver (Chang, 2008). Males and females appear to be affected proportionately. Crohn’s disease can occur in people of any age, but it is mostly a disease of adolescents and young adults. However, Crohn’s disease may occur in people over 70 years old and in young children (Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, 2009).
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory and an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissue (Rheumatoid arthritis, 2017). This disease affects the entire body, which is called a systemic (means entire body) disease. Arthritis is derived from the word part arthr-, which means “joint,” and -itis, which means “inflammation,” so altogether it means “inflammation of the joints.” It creates inflammation that causes the tissue that lines the inside of joints (synovium) to thicken. About 1.5 million people in the U.S. are affected. It affects all races, but it affects three times as many women than men (What is Rheumatoid Arthritis, n.d.). Overtime, rheumatoid arthritis causes painful swelling that can potentially result in bone erosion or joint deformity, which leads up to physical disabilities. RA can affect more than just your joints, but can spread to body systems, skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood vessels, e.t.c (Rheumatoid arthritis, 2017).
Irregular bowel movements or constipation is quite a major and common concern in adults and babies as well. The condition becomes more challenging when it comes to babies. Parents of infants worry when their infant’s bowel movement is not regular and clear as that causes formation of gas and stomach pain.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is when the joints are chronically inflamed, which happens because it is an autoimmune disease which means that the immune system attacks the body tissues. Although Rheumatoid Arthritis mainly affects the joints, it can also affect other organs.

Inflammatory bowel disease is a life long disease, and it particularly targets the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract), which consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach small intestine, large intestine (appendix, cecum, colon (ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid), and rectum), and anus. The gastrointestinal tract is very important to the human body; some of its functions include mechanical and chemical digestion of food, the movement of food and waste from mouth to anus, secretion of enzymes and mucus, and the absorption of nutrients. These are some reason why it’s so destructive when this part of the body becomes impaired or even damaged.
