The marriage between characters Steve Brady and Miranda Hobbs is one of the central relationships focused upon in the 2008 film Sex and the City. The depiction of their relationship is enshrined in the events leading up to Steve’s sexual unfaithfulness to his wife, his admittance of his transgression and the couple’s journey to reconciliation. Prior to Steve’s isolated act of infidelity, audiences see the low marital satisfaction between the couple. Psychological research is able to explain that this low marital satisfaction is derived from an also low sexual satisfaction that their only child was likely to have influenced. The type of infidelity committed by Steve and his justification for doing so is also representative of psychological research results. Studies have shown that males who have extramarital affairs typically commit sexual infidelity and use a sexual reason as causation for initiating the affair. Psychological research can also explain Miranda’s ability to forgive Steve and the absence of her exhibition of jealousy. The relationship between Steve and Miranda is an accurate film depiction of psychological research on infidelity in marriages.
The state of the couple’s marriage prior to Steve’s extradyadic affair is a veracious representation of findings derived from psychological research. Augustus Napier is a family therapist with vast experience in family therapeutic processes and experiential therapy with couples. In my research of his background, I reviewed his book “The Family Crucible.” In this text, Dr. Napier chronicles the therapeutic process of one fictitious family (which is a composite of real cases) experiencing marital discord. In reviewing the case studies in this book, I gained insight into his style of the therapeutic process, which exposed Dr. Napier’s framework which leads to his assumptions about marriage. The details of this case study coupled with Dr. Napier’s added paragraphs and chapters of analyses with his conclusions on the maladaptive reasons people marry other people make this resource of great qualitative value. More research can be done to examine the relationship between repeated engagement with romantic comedies and specific expectations held by those who watch them. Furthermore, it would be interesting to thoroughly compare relationship expectations in both men and women who watch porn and romantic comedies and to learn why they watch either.
One of the major conflicts in The Crucible is the fact that John Proctor committed adultery. By dissecting his affair with Abigail Williams it is evident that the witch hunt would have never happened. Did Abigail seductively entice John and lure him to stray or did he do the seducing? Abigail wanted John as her husband and she wanted him so bad she took down a town in the process.
Sex in today’s world can be seen anywhere. It is on billboards, radio stations, personal books, school books, magazines, peers, movies, songs, and the most famous is televisions. Commercials use seductive images, sounds, and music grabbing the attention of the audience. Movies and television are proof of the sickness of sexual addiction in society. This disease spreads across the country, infecting the way people think and live their lives. Ultimately it is destroying society and what America holds to be morally correct. Two such sources of writing, “Sic Transit Gloria…Glory Fades” and Countering the Culture of Sex, give examples of what effect culture play in the way of living. Today’s culture pumps out messages of sexual immorality and the idea of sexual relations outside of marriage are fine. Sexual immorality can destroy families and create dysfunction in the sacred vows of marriage.
In America women have gone through so many social norms that has affected them throughout a lifetime. Since then with the changes, mass media got involved in this type of movement. American culture shifted where women where becoming professionals in the work force, more independent and less likely to marry. As a result, television networks created a series of shows to expose and associate the female audience to the TV shows. From Charlies Angels to Sex in the City and for our present time Nashville show, incorporate feminism to be shown in the small screen, in every decade shows exhibited the 3 feminist movement waves. While reading “The Kugelmass Episode,” I realized the emotional distress that someone can be put through after being a part of an affair. I also came to the realization Sidney’s affair might have been caused by a midlife crisis. A midlife crisis can cause several different changes in people’s normal life style, an affair being one of them. An affair is a relationship between two people without the other spouse knowing. Usually complications with the marriage will be the first thing considered when an affair is occurring. Not only does this create problems with the marriage as a whole, but also with each spouse individually. Although affairs do happen often, they could be avoided with noticing the signs of a midlife crisis early on. Married
Infidelity is depicted as an extremely negative thing in the United States, and is often blamed for trust issues, psychologically damaging the spouse and their children, tearing apart marriages and families and more. People who commit adultery are often shamed and told how wrong what they did is and what a terrible person they are for doing it. According to the Journal of Martial and Family by the Associated Press, however, 41% of “marriages where one or both spouses admit to infidelity, either physical or emotional.” Clearly, while infidelity is generally viewed negative by society, many people either decide that it is not as negative as it is portrayed, or do not care and do it anyway. “The Lady with the Pet Dog” and “The Storm” both go against the typical view of adultery being a negative thing in a relationship by showing that it can actually have a beneficial outcome and leave some, if not all people happier.
In this paper I am writing about marriage and infidelity in modern life and the books we have read in class. Marriage is a mutual bond in which a man and a woman decide to be with each other until they die. Infidelity is basically when the man or woman in a relationship cheat on the other person, without them knowing.
The male is supposed to be the main bread winner of the family unit, making money and protecting the woman while she tends to the children and the house. In the modern day this mold has been challenged to a certain extent with more woman moving into careers beyond the home. However, in Freud’s time these set matrimonial roles were still in place, especially the ones limiting women from having any form of sexual relations prior to her wedding. As he puts it, a high value is placed on a women’s “preservation of sexual chastity”. Practices such as ‘slut-shaming’ represent a continuation of this tendency to stigmatize the sexual promiscuity of women. Freud argues that this lack of sexual experience and knowledge of a woman will lead to problems for both parties in a marriage. In today’s heterosexual and patriarchal society sex and sexual desires revolve around men, and Hoagland sets out seven patterns showing how this is the case. Sex is thought of as a “powerful and uncontrollable urge” and male sexuality therefore is a basic component to male health, sexual acts show male conquest and domination, sexual freedom gives men total access to and over women, rape is, by this logic, natural and women who resist a man’s advances are “‘frigid’”, sex involves losing control and sexual desire, when described as erotic, “involves a death wish (eros)”. There was a time when more smart-conscious decisions were made relating to sexual relationships. In particular, sexual relationships within a marriage. However, times have changed. The pillars that hold up our individual sexual values have started to crumble. It is estimated that two out of three marriages fail due to infidelity. This is a scary statistic considering that people believe a marriage can survive infidelity. This brings us to our first myth: Everyone has affairs.
