To be able to explain why a parent should get their infant vaccinated, there needs to be a way to approach them without being hostile, without overloading them with information, and to prove vaccines are safe for their child. The risks of symptoms from developing the vaccine-preventable disease are more significant than the few risks from getting the vaccination that will prevent the disease. Because there are so many vaccinations, I would start by explaining the risks of a certain vaccine. I would then show the patient the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for that specific vaccine, provided by the CDC. Measles, mumps, and rubella can all cause symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, some type of rash or swelling, and many others. If the disease becomes more severe, measles can result in ear infections, pneumonia, seizures, and eventually brain damage or death. Mumps may result in deafness, brain and spinal cord infections, and even sterility. Rubella complications can result in miscarriages in pregnant women or serious birth defects. To further inform the patient, I believe providing pictures from those who have actually suffered from the diseases would be beneficial, and this would allow the parent to understand what some of these diseases really can do. A study conducted by UCLA found that providing skeptics with information of the dangers of the disease, along with pictures of those who have suffered from it, actually increased the amount of support for the vaccination.
Lastly, I would explain to the parent why getting vaccinated can not only save their child, but other children who are either not old enough to receive certain vaccinations or those who have conditions that prevent them from being able to be vaccinated. The less often someone vaccinates their child, the higher risk these people have of developing the disease.
