The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees that all children with disabilities receive free public education that meets their individual needs while preparing them to further their education, learn employment and independent living skills.
Sadly “prior to IDEA, over 4 million children with disabilities were denied appropriate access to public education. Many children were denied entry into public school altogether, while others were placed in segregated classrooms, or in regular classrooms without adequate support for their special needs (Katsiyannis, Yell, Bradley, 2001; Martin, Martin, Terman, 1996; U.S. Department of Education, 2010)”. These services guarantee that all children with disabilities will have equal access to education. This is usually done in several ways, many children usually have an IEP which is an Individual Educational Plan which is always drawn up by specialist, teachers and parents and under certain circumstances the student is included to participate if possible. The IEP describes the student’s current academic level and the steps needed to achieve certain goals throughout the year.
