Individualism In Harrison Bergeron

As humans every individual on planet earth was created to be equal .Meaning despite race, colour, gender, sexuality, appearance or ability to perform a task everybody is the same.In the present society and generation its very difficult for everybody to be seen in the same way or treated equally. Harrison Bergeron takes place in 2081 and the government has been modified due to the government affirming laws in attempt to achieve total equality amongst everyone in society.Individuality is not supported by the government in fear of the idea of equality not being successful .Throughout the story characters such as Harrison, George ,and Hazel Bergeron encounter overwhelming events.In the short story Harrison Bergeron the author Kurt Vonnegut develops the idea of the dangers associated with total equality and the absence of individuality resulting in disastrous consequences.The outcome of the laws lead to lack of individualism and absence of freedom .Vonnegut also brings forward the actions the government takes in attempt to eliminate any threating forces.

The laws that are set in 2081 which were originally put in place to eliminate opposition and create total equality, but results in an opposing outcome which leads to the elimination of an environment with freedom or individual indentity.Its ironic that equality is seen as equality ;The government uses propaganda to brainwash and manipulate the citizens living under the government at the time.Harrisons father George Bergeron is one out of the many citizens that has a mental handicap device implanted in his head.A radio is used to disrupt and prevent pro-longed thought.Heavy metal weights are strapped around Georges neck leaving him incapable of doing any task that wil...

The author creates the idea that threatening forces often result in negative outcomes when dealt with insensibly . Total equality amongst society does not result in a perfect world like expected.Instead of creating equality towards aspects such as intelligence or physical appearance, the government and the human population should put effort towards creating equality on much needed problems such as discrimination towards race ,religion and sexuality .There is and most likely never will be total equality in the world without sacrifices of freedom and individual rights being made and possibly even events leading to disastrous consequences. Individuality will be the cost for absolute equality which will lead to a dull and tedious world.
