Individualism is emphasised in America’s society today. Making choices that are for your benefit is prioritized when planning your tomorrow or even planning for your future. Living in tight, small communities can cause difficulty in making decisions where it might not benefit the community, but it benefits the individual. Freedom is perceived as a positive aspect of people’s lives. 39 percent of the world’s global population is not free today. This means that they do not have freedom of religion, speech, life. So, how in these communities that are not deemed as “Free” can people make individual choices. How does individual freedom change the community the people are in? Everyday we have the chance to make her own opinions and give reason to our own voice. We have the chance to live in a country that encourages freedom in society, which separate ourselves from any restrictions imposed upon by authority, actions or any political views. liberty is the power we possess to act as we please through freedom and independence. Given that despots have every interest in keeping people isolated, the individualism resulting from equality makes despotism a great danger to equality. "Despotism... sees in the separation among men the surest guarantee of its continuance, and it usually makes every effort to keep them separate" (399). Exercising freedom through participation in public affairs is therefore extremely vital because it gives people a personal interest in thinking about others in society. Local self-governments are important because they draw people together, and it is therefore more likely that they will exercise their liberty. Tocqueville states that "as soon as a man begins to treat of public affairs in public, he begins to perceive that he is not so independent of his fellow men as he had first imagined, and that in order to obtain their support he must often lend them his cooperation" (400). When people act together they frequently form dependencies on one another, especially when they are working for the good of the entire community.
People should benefit from freedom, equality and justice. Absolute freedom is sometimes very dangerous and may destroy the basic principles of the society. A lot of people believe that freedom means doing whatever you want, whenever you want.
Social Norms in America They hold us together as a culture, while separating us as unique individuals at the same time. Folkways, which are based more on custom and etiquette, are the most broken of all norms. This can be explained because in the worst case scenario our only reprimand may be someone staring or talking about us. Mores, while a little more serious than folkways, still don’t have a very serious punishment, just maybe a little more than weird looks, double takes and bad mouthing.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and 1984 by George Orwell depict dystopian futures with people being ruled by extremely powerful and oppressive governments. In Brave New World, the government is called the World State, and is led by the World Controller, Mustapha Mond. American freedom has faced many tribulations, especially throughout the slavery, segregation, and women’s suffrage eras. However, the ideological belief of individual freedom has always triumphed. From when the first Pilgrim stepped onto American soil to the present day America has been run by a democracy and the freedom that system of government allows its peoples to have. “Americans share a common identity grounded in the freedom — consistent always with respecting the freedom of others — to live as they choose” (Friedman).

Natural systems can be thought of as non-separable and therefore non-individual. This non-individuality is a conceptual framework of the philosophy of science. Specifically, we observe from the theory of quantum mechanics "the intimate connection in the inseparably connected things, e.g., of parts and wholes, of substances and their attributes, of action and reaction, of genus and species, and substances in which they reside, and of eternal substances and their ultimate differences". On this principle, nothing possesses an essential nature of its very own individuality, because "every several thing is a blend, and its name is merely an indication of the dominant constituent." Furthermore, "the best possible knowledge of a whole does not necessarily include the same for its parts, or the whole is in a definite state, the parts taken individually are not".
One significant issue in contemporary culture is the lack of individuality in today’s conformist society. Since the modern world is a multicultural melting pot, being one’s own person can go against traditional social norms. This is a problem that matters because of the surprising phenomenon of conformity that makes people surrender to it without resistance. Many people are rushed or stressed in life, so they resort to what the rest of society is doing. Thus, becoming too much of a conformist rather than an individual. Conformity, however, is part of nature. Mankind thrives on it like a honeybee thrives on flowers. The idea of the world as one is often misunderstood and taken too seriously, especially within organized groups such as cults. Philosophy, however, helps both the group and individual to reach self-actualization. Throughout my life, I have come to adopt philosophy as a major aspect of my thinking and self-identification.
After reading Ralph Emerson’s Self-Reliance, I have spent a lot of time thinking about how is individualism is looked at today in America. The conclusion after pondering this question is that individuality it is under attack. People’s color of their skin, personality, clothing, and home life are all under attack.
Freedom is a human value that has inspired many poets, politicians, spiritual leaders, and philosophers for centuries. Poets have rhapsodized about freedom for centuries. Politicians present the utopian view that a perfect society would be one where we all live in freedom, and spiritual leaders teach that life is a spiritual journey leading the soul to unite with God, thus achieving ultimate freedom and happiness. In addition, we have the philosophers who perceive freedom as an inseparable part of our nature, and spend their lives questioning the concept of freedom and attempting to understand it (Transformative Dialogue, n.d.).
When referring to freedom these words are often associated with freedom: Liberty, independence, sovereignty, autonomy, privilege, immunity, and indulgence. Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and justice. Independence is granted by freedom in the sense that an outside party does not control you. To gratify ones desires by whichever ways they choose is freedom through indulgence. Privileges are g ranted through freedom. In some countries the dictator or ruler makes choices for their people on regards to what profession they shall have or to what religion they shall worship. In the United States we have special privileges that let the people of the country decide on their own religion and professions.
As said by John F. Kennedy: Ask not what your country can do for you: Ask what you can do for your country. Collectivism has had the greatest effect on society today because it helps to meet the needs of everyone equally. It helps to create equality in society and make everyone work together to benefit all. Things like making people with larger incomes pay more taxes, or people should earn equal wages for work of similar value, and no private property help to make things fair. One of my personal favorite quotes from Jim Morrison, lead singer, from the doors. "The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are." This quote rings complete truth. People seek freedom, freedom is found in being your true self and letting all judgement fade away. Individuality is attained throughout your beliefs and the things you carry with yourself. I personally believe that I maintain individuality throughout living out your beliefs and being passionate about what you love and who you love. Though sometimes individuality and special character cannot be attained through such simple things it takes work and you will encounter obstacles. If you are truly passionate you will overcome these obstacles and further your individualism and passions even more. I chose four specific media for this assignment. They also use their reason because reason, or intellect, knows there is a God, the highest good, and will chooses this good. Similarly, ethics comes from free will because human beings try to consistently choose what is in most accordance with God. People can also choose not to believe in any religion or moral code at all. David Hume, defines liberty as the, “power of acting or of not acting, according to the determination of the will.” Aquinas similarly stated that human beings desire things, and make decisions to pursue these things. Being a human being means using free will for good and that is why free will is what human nature is.
