Multiple factors complicate the task of attracting advertisers in the music industry. Independent artists or small-label artists find it especially difficult because of the competition with large record companies. Because only four major companies exist, they attract most advertisers. Large companies mean large revenues for advertisers. They reach larger scopes and have more connections than smaller companies. Independent and small-label artists rely on word-of-mouth and live performances for the bulk of promotion (Garland, 2003). Advertisers find this less promising without guarantees of success or a large audience reception. Singers and musicians also attract advertisers when their music fits a mold for use in television or radio commercials. If the song hooks the listener and fits with an advertiser’s promotional goals, they may request use of a song. If the song is already popular, this may be appealing to advertisers as well, since listeners would notice when their favorite song or a song they have heard a million times plays in the background of a commercial, and would help the advertisers sell the product. For success of indie artists in this area, they would have to promote their songs in a way that would be noticeable to advertisers. They could do this through online distribution and platforms such as YouTube, where many indie artists can cultivate large followings and find success.
