Healthcare is a constantly changing field, where information, technology, and practices are always improving. This has been especially true over the past half century. As a result, there have been drastic improvements in caring for patients. However, with these improvements, we have seen unanticipated issues which have actually hindered the ability for healthcare providers to care for patients. Rapid improvements in healthcare have caused various patient populations to survive longer, which means that healthcare workers need to meet the needs of a more varied group. These aims are generalized, so that they never become outdated. If these aims are followed and reached, the aforementioned issues will be mitigated. These aims instruct healthcare to be safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable (“Crossing the Quality,” 2001). Healthcare covers a wide array of different services, so these aims can take on a different form depending on the services that are rendered to the patient. Also, many of these goals of patient care overlap, so developing a concise way of caring for patients will ensure that healthcare providers are providing the most up to date patient care possible. A great example of a concise implementation of these aims is the list of 2016 National Patient Safety Goals for the hospital setting. These goals include identifying patients correctly, improving staff communication, the safe use of medicines, the safe use of alarms, preventing infection, identifying patient safety risks, and preventing mistakes in surgery (“National Patient Safety,” 2016). The demands on health care providers to provide the best quality care for patients is increasing. With added responsibilities and demands on our health care workers, it is hard not to become overwhelmed and forget the reason and purpose of our profession. However, there is a way where all professionals can meet and come together for a common cause, which is the patient. A new approach to patient care is coming of age. This approach allows all health care professionals to collaborate and explore the roles of other professions in the hope of creating a successful health care team.
Unfortunately, the quality of health care in America is flawed. Information technology (IT) offers the potential to address the industry’s most pressing dilemmas: care fragmentation, medical errors, and rising costs. The leading example of this is the electronic health record (EHR). An EHR, as explained by HealthIT.gov (n.d.), is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart. It includes, but is not limited to, medical history, diagnoses, medications, and treatment plans. The EHR, then, serves as a resource that aids clinicians in decision-making by providing comprehensive patient information.

Florence Nightingale was the Nurse of Nurses. In nursing school she is the first person you will hear speak of. She is known as “The lady with the lamp”. Her theory focused on the adjustment of the environment provided to protect the patient. She thought that a sleeping patient should never be awaken. Noise should always be avoided because it can startle the sleeping patient. This was a serious problem to her. She delegated tasks to other nurses, always keeping the patients safe and away from harm.
Quality and quality improvement are important to any healthcare organization because these principles allows organizations to fulfill their missions more effectively. Defining what quality is may differ depending on whom is asking the question, as differing participates may have differing ideas about what quality means and why it is important. According to Healthy People 2012 there are more then 800,000 new cases of diabetes each year, with the numbers on the rise. With this in mind, Healthy People 2012 has identified diabetes as their number five focus area. In order to reach their goal of improving the quality of life for people with diabetes they have identified diabetes teaching as their number one objective. Furthermore, in order to reduce the number of complications of diabetes, Healthy People 2012 has identified foot ulcers as their ninth objective. Through patient education Healthy People 2012 hopes to reduce the number of foot ulcers in people with diabetes, as diabetes is the number one cause of nontraumatic amputations in the United States. In order to successfully reduce the number of amputations and diabetic foot ulcers, patient teaching is essential. Patient teaching, as with the nursing process, begins with assessment in order to identify the patients learning needs (Wilkinson & Van Leuven, 2007).
Also, these studies question those who are effected; in this case, those who are most effected, is everyone. Doctors and nurses spend the most time working within these systems, but the information that is put into these systems effects every individual in America, because it is their information. Because nurses are often considered “both coordinators and providers of patient care” and they “attend to the whole patient,” their opinion is highly regarded (Otieno, Toyama, Asonuma, Kanai-Pak, & Naitoh, 2007, p. 210). It is clear that the use of these new systems is much debated, and many people have their own, individualized opinion. This information suggests that when there is a problem in the medical field, those who address it attempt to gather opinions from everyone who is involved before proceeding. The World Health Organization outlines 6 areas of quality that help shape our definition of what makes quality care. Those areas are; (1) Effective: using evidence bases practice to improve health outcomes based on needs of individuals and communities. (2) Efficient: healthcare that maximizes resources and minimizes waste. (3) Accessible: timely care that is provided in a setting where the skills and resources are appropriate for the medical need and is geographically reasonable. (4) Acceptable/Patient-Centered: healthcare that considers individual needs, preferences, and culture. (5) Equitable: healthcare quality that does not vary because of race, gender, ethnicity, geographical location, or socioeconomically status. Technology is stated as the scientific method and material used to achieve a commercial or industrial objective. To go one step further, nursing technology is using a tool to advance nursing practice. “The Institute of medicine identified that technology as a viable method of enhancing patient care delivery and improving staff productivity” Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003 page). Because inadequate nursing staff causes shortcuts to be taken, there are mistakes made that could have possibly been prevented.
