Companies are usually looking for skills which go beyond scholastic degrees, accreditations and licenses. Education may make you eligible to apply for employment but you still need to showcase a mix of skills to be successful at your job. This mix of skills is called employability skills (key competencies or soft skills). These are the basic skills essential for attaining, keeping, and doing well on your chosen job: (1) basic academic skills: reading, writing, math, oral communication, listening; (2) critical thinking skills: learning, thinking creatively, reasoning, decision making, problem solving, organizing, planning; and (3) personal attributes: professionalism, dependable/reliable/responsible, loyal and dedicated, initiative, positive attitude, willingness to learn, negotiating and persuading, honesty and integrity, self-confidence, stress tolerance, time management, excellent team player. Tourism, for example is considered as a modern construct. In turn, there is some debate on what aspects of this contemporary culture should be integrated into teaching. It is argued that tourism should be taught in context to the “real” world (Airey, Tribe, 2005). When tourism education was first developed in vocational schools in Europe, students were trained under industry core competencies such as tourism-related business skills, hotel management and hospitality.
