Social Media is a platform of applications and websites designed or developed to enable people network via the internet. Social media is a tool that connects people through sharing contents such as photographs, messages, events, news, gossips and even opinions on chosen subjects.
Social media can be used for so much more than self-promotions and attention seeking. Indeed, social media can be used as a learning toll in this digital age. Many secondary and post-secondary school students are already hooked on social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, YouTube, and they can often be seen posting pictures, videos or responding to comments via their mobile devices.
For leaning and teaching, social media is used in a variety of different contexts- language learning, writing development, after call discussions, synchronous and asynchronous communications, community building and circular tool. The rate of lack of skill to use technology is very high thus, before a teacher can use social media to teach, he himself must be taught on how to use it. Most persons solely use social media to ‘catch up with friends and family’. Bearing in mind that learning, teaching, and scholarship are sociocultural phenomena situated in specific contexts and influenced by the cultures in which they take place (Brown, Collins, & Duguid, 1989; Vygotsky, 1978). Until the mind set and certain basic social amenities are being provided for by the government, the effective use of this tool as a method of teaching and learning will be just a wish. There are poor reference materials on most social media platforms. Most information that circulates on these platforms is majorly expressions of opinion and not scholarly works or research
