Every sport in today’s modern world seems to think it is the fastest paced sport around. From football, to baseball, to soccer, to lacrosse, all of these sports seem to think they have the fastest paced sport. Another sport that is played today that seems to be very low key to being the fastest paced sport is ice hockey. The real question here is since speed is a major part of ice hockey, is it more so than any other sport played by professional athletes? Accordingly, one reason ice hockey has such a fast pace is because, unlike football, baseball, or lacrosse, it is played on a sheet of ice instead of a grass or artificial field such as AstroTurf. This adds into how the players of ice hockey are able to achieve, and maintain, a high rate of speed throughout the course of the game. A good example of this was mentioned in an online article from the SportsNet webpage. Elliotte Friedman wrote “but only Carl Hagelin had a faster highest speed, at slightly above 37 kilometers per hour.” Through further reading of the article, only When looking at speed, it can be a relative question. If one is talking about speed in comparison to long distance than yes, speed skaters are faster. If one is looking at speed in the sense of acceleration, then ice hockey is faster. A video on YouTube created by CCM Hockey actually shows a professional speed skater pitted against an NHL hockey player to see who can accelerate faster. Shown in the video, the hockey player is able to accelerate faster than the speed skater is able to (CCM Hockey, 2014). A good comparison of this is when one is looking at how long distance runners run compared to short distance runners. Distance runners can maintain a speed longer while short distance runners can achieve their top speed
