As humans, we all want to live a long, prosperous, healthy life. To do so, we must incorporate the proper factors in our everyday life span to make this possible. Living well has to do with exercising and a healthy diet, surrounding myself with respectable people, and helping others out before myself. First of all, exercising and having a healthy diet are a way that we can live well. Exercising reduces stress and builds up your muscles. Personally, I believe this because I exercise all the time and it does reduce stress. When I run, it helps me clear my mind and whenever I have a bad thought, I push myself harder but not to the extent that is detrimental. In addition, having a healthy diet can be beneficial as well. The people who surround us can shape the type of person we become. For instance, I’ve noticed when I am around my friend who is very dependent and has to rely on other people, I see old habits that I used to exhibit. Therefore, I distant myself more because I do not want to fall back into old habits. Also, being surrounded with people who do good in their life is extremely beneficial as well. I’ve noticed that there are a few ways each day in my life that I can help someone. A good example is, all around town I see homeless people holding up signs asking for money or for food. One night my fiancé and I ate at Cheddars restaurant and as we were leaving, there was a homeless man lying on the grass with a dog and had a sign that said “Need food, please help”. I realized that moment that my life could be worse and we had leftover steak and handed it to the man. He was very thankful and said him and his dog loved steak and that is going to be one of the best meals in a while. I just felt better about myself after that moment. Gareth Cook mentions in his article that Michael Norton from Harvard Business School says “Norton argues that doing something for someone else provides a tremendous boost in our confidence that we can get things done” (qtd in cook 606). I am in agreement with Norton on his statement because after giving that man our food, I felt so much more confident in myself and in choices I make after that evening. In addition, helping people can actually feel like it saves us time. In our economy nowadays, we have to do so much to make it in this life and feeling like taking that extra few minutes to help somebody else out can take a burden on us.
